Hair Help

I wanted to have my hair up for the reception and then for the reception let it loose. I dont plan to have the stylist there so would this be too much to do right before the entrance to the reception? Would this even be a good idea in general? My ceremony will take place outdoors and the reception indoors.

Re: Hair Help

  • depending on how long your hair is, using a few bobby pins and twisting your hair up in sections, is fairly quick and easy
  • This would've been impossible for me to do.  I had really long, fine hair and we had to use 1,000 pins and a ton of hairspray to make sure it would stay for 12+ hours.  I also had an elaborate updo that I loved, so I would never have wanted to take it down.

Maybe if you did something half up/down and didn't use a lot of spray it could work but it honestly sounds like more trouble that it is worth.
  • It depends on the ease of the hairdo you have for the ceremony. A little thing to think about is how warm you get dancing with your hair down. I have chosen to have my hair up (much to my mother's disapproval, she loves my long, thick golden locks), because I get really overheated when dancing with my hair down. I always have a hairtie on me, especially if I am going to a club or something because my hair is just too heavy. But, if you don't have this problem, letting your hair down would be a nice way to show that the reception is a time to relax and enjoy yourself.

Also, if you plan on doing this tell your stylist. They will help choose a style that will come out easily and will tell you how many bobby-pins and everything so that it comes down nicely.
  • I am in the same situation.  I don't really like the idea of having my hair up because it just isn't me but I am getting married on the beach and afraid that my hair will be blowing everywhere.  Are you having a hairdresser put your hair up?  If so, do a trial with her and ask her to show you how to take it down.  If not, make sure that your updo is simple, having a 100 pins in your hair may take a while to get down.  Play with different hair clips, but it can certainly be done.

    Good Luck
  • If you want it up for the outdoor ceremony, I'd recommend leaving it as is for the reception.  Unless you can come up with some kind of part up/part down, or easily transitioned hair style.

To keep your outdoor-worthy updo to stay secured, it usually requires a lot of pins and hairspray.  Trying to take that down can get a little tricky, and usually leaves you with odd "dents" in your hair.

I know it looks all sexy in the movies and commercials when the pretty girl unfastens one pin and shakes her hair loose into long beautiful curls in one smooth motion.  But IRL, it just doesn't happen that way.

You will likely have too many other things demanding your attention to be fussing with your hair in the ladies room (you weren't planning on doing it in the reception hall were you?  Cause it's kind of eeww if hair starts falling on tables where people are eating).
  • My hair is thick and heavy and long and I guess it was just wishful thinking to try and let it loose for the reception. I am just like you fishieballerina i always have a hairtie on me and my hair picked up but 5 min later I let it loose cause I start getting a headache so its kinda of back and forth with me. I'll probably pick it up but just not have it tight so I dont get a headache but also the price to have her there to change my hair is out of our budget.. sucks...
    but thank you everyone.
