cocktail, hors d'oeuvres and music reception

We are having a destination wedding and then a reception afterwards when we return. We are having a cocktail, hors d'oeuvres and music reception and we are wondering what time would be a good time to start and also how to include this in the invitation so people knowwe are not having a sit down dinner. Our idea right now is to have the reception start at 7. Have food out till 9 and music till 12. Any thoughts, suggestions or ideas would help.

I would start your reception later than 7. Maybe more like 8:00, so it isn't within "dinner time." I'm doing the same type of reception but having mine in the afternoon, so it will be over before dinner time begins. My invitation is saying "cocktail and hors d'oeurves reception to follow ceremony." Yours could just have the first part...
