Cocktail hour decor

My cocktail hour is in a seperate room than my dinner/dance. I'm not exactly sure what kind of decorations to do. Its so much easier when there is the cake, tables with plates and centerpieces etc in the main room... what is everyone else doing?

Re: Cocktail hour decor

  • will you have little tables? you can do bid vases with single stems. hang paper lanterns, votive lanterns, luminarias, fabric, from the ceilings. Potted trees, mood lighting, wall decor, and making any appetizer stations/bar decorative as well, I am big on food being presented creatively, you eat with your eyes first, take it a step further, youve seen cute or chic pics of dessert tables? that can be adapted with hors d'orves, cool plates and platters, even if the food is passed, add nice touches. your best bet is to create an atmosphere, with big stuff, lighting, furnature, colors, and then just add little personal cool details.

  • What does the cocktail room look like?
I went to 2 weddings with the cocktails in a separate room.  One room was gorgeous and did not need anything to make it look better.

The second was suppose to be on a nice terrace with pretty flowers and greenery surrounding the area.  It rained on her wedding day so we were crammed in this little room with a view of where we were suppose to be.  Obviously - the B&G were hoping to use the terrace so they didn't spend $ on decorations for the room we ended up using.  As boring as that room was, however, I can't imagine how they could have decorated it if they tried.. it may have just turned tacky.

Both cocktail rooms had cocktail tables in linens that matched the dining tables.  You can also do a mini centerpiece on them.  You can also decorate the gift table nicely (which I assume will be somewhere in the cocktail room or just outside it).

IMO- anything beyond that may be a waste of money.

  • Just read katieann85s recommendations- I like those ideas!

We had small round cocktail tables and we just did a bowl of floating white roses and petals--our venue actually provided it but it could be done easily.  We also had the same linens as our reception tables.

  • Depending on the location maybe you could go as simple as just having some nice, colorful table clothes . . add some confetti to the top and maybe a candle or two. I doubt you would want to spend to much money or time decorating because your guest really won't spend to much time at this location. It might be nice to make a picture table . . everyone loves seeing pictures and it would sure give them something to do during this time. You could also have your guest book out for them to sign while they mingle.
