Will this look weird?

Our color scheme for the reception is black white and red. We just found out the chairs that come with the venue are brown. I don't like chair covers and it seems silly to pay to rent new ones. Will brown chairs look weird with black, white and red centerpieces and linens?

Re: Will this look weird?

  • No, it will be fine.  No one will likely even notice the chairs, unless they don't have one.  :)
  • I'm personally weird about little details like that, so I think it'd look a little bit off. Then again, I don't know what color brown or red, so they may end up being complimentary!

If not, you could consider adding a red/white/black sash to the chair instead of a full-on chair cover.

  • Obviously this totally depends on what you're comfortable with, but since you're asking my opinion... I'm personally one of those people that can walk in a room and immediately pick out something that is wrong or doesn't go (or even is spelled wrong on a full page of text). For my wedding, this would drive me nuts. My color scheme is black and white with splashes of purple. My venue also has brown chairs, but I will definitely be renting chair covers (black with white sashes). Does your venue work with a rental company that could set up a table for you? I'm meeting with mine this month where they will do a sample setup for me with the items I've selected so I can see if I want to tweak anything. Perhaps your venue could do a sample setup for you so you could see it for real before you decide?

  • Don't think much about it. No one will notice. It will look good. You can also think about some light colors.
  • They're pretty dark brown and it's kind of dim in the venue but yes, i'm also the kind of person who would be driven nuts by this! It looks like it would be cheaper just to rent new chairs than get chair covers. I'll see if any other product exists to cover them up but thank you for making me feel like it's not just me!
  • It depends on what you like and what you can afford to do to handle the situation. I personally think they will just blend in and you won't see them, however, I am getting chair covers for mine, just because I think it will add to the overall look of the room. I was able to borrow over half of them, so it wasn't an issue for me.

If you really don't like the chairs, and you don't want to buy or rent covers, you can always tie a tulle bow to the back of each chair, or add some sort of decoration. If you are handy with a sewing machine, you can always get enough fabric to cover only the back of the chair. They end up looking similar to pillow cases. Our local JoAnn's has fabric sales every week, so if you have one close by, you could potentially do it for very little money.
  • Dark brown may be close enough to black to blend in, especially in dim lighting. However, if it really bothers you and you don't like chair covers, I would just rent white chairs.
