Wanting Opinions on Colors

I just bought my dream dress on a rather large whim but luckily it fits me nicely and I absolutly love it. The only problem is that I was expecting a bright red and it is more of a burgandy/cranberry/raspberry color. Those are all the color names my family has been throwing around as we try to pinpoint the color. It is an Alfred Angelo dress and I believe they call the color Claret. We are having a Spring wedding and I am having trouble picking another color to go with it. I am not completly against just the "Claret" and white for the colors but I would like something springy. All ideas are welcome as I am at a lost and feel like I have tried everything in combo with it and still haven't fell in love with an idea yet. Our ceremony will be outside and our reception inside. Locations not quite set yet. The ceremony is probably going to be outside at Clifty Falls State Park in Madison Indiana.

This is my dress.

Thank you in advance for any and all ideas!!

Re: Wanting Opinions on Colors

  • It's beautiful.

My first thought is to do champagne/claret  but I am totally biased because my wedding was champagne.  A girl on my local did silver and claret which is also pretty.  Once you pick your venue you might have a better idea of what direction to go.
  • Black, silver, gold, light pink, grey, champagne, bright red...just a few that popped into my head that you could mix in.

I just did a color palette search for red on colourlovers...there's a ton. You might get some inspiration there:

  • Thank you both for the ideas! I have thought about just the claret and white or champange color but I am having a more casual affiar and when I look at those together it seems fancy. I love the colourlovers website that is just an amazing tool I did not know about!

My biggest problem is that I fell in love with having a Fall wedding. I will not go into details because it makes my heart ache to think about it. My Fiance and I can not have a Fall wedding, it is completly out of the question. So I am trying desperatly to be as inspired for my Spring wedding.
  • <div>Hi there, I've seen that dress it's so beautiful and different.  I think for spring coral, hints of pink, and ivory go with it (I like the champagne idea too!).  I also think dark purple, hints of pink and white go nicely too it's bright for spring but still has the drama of the dark red.  Best of luck!</div><div>

  • Claret and burgundy are both types of wine.

Claret with Champagne and Sage would be very classic
Claret with pale pink and soft grey would be vintage and romantic
Claret with white would be very stark and modern.
Claret with gold would be very elegant
Claret with silver and navy would be very wintry.
Claret with brown and orange would be very autmnal

To acheive a Spring effect, I would add pale pink, claret and sage bouquets and put the groom and groomsmen in soft grey tuxes/suits.   The pastel colors of pink and sage are very Spring-like.  The soft grey of the tuxes with a claret and grey tie would provide a link to your dress.

  • Thank you so much Magdala9! I was trying to figure out what types of colors would siginify the event I am trying to have!
  • I feel you on changing from a fall wedding vision to a spring one -- FI and I are going through the same mental shift.  Soft and warm shades tend to be more spring-like, so I tend to agree with the suggestions of pinks, grays, soft sage, sand and champagne/cream/ivory ... a soft apricot would also be lovely (esp. with gray or sage).  You might also consider whether there is a flower that you like that coordinates with the "claret" or has touches of claret and could provide inspiration for the rest of the palatte:  Cherry blossoms? Stargazer lilies?  Fire-and-ice roses? Magnolia? Orchids?
  • I think a nice yellow would be beautiful. Not too formal but enough that it will match your dress style and still go with the casual feel of your wedding. One of the muted yellows in the invitation you linked would be great.

I am at a lost. I have taken a break from wedding planning because I am returning to school to complete my business degree. Recently I have noticed that fall decorations are starting to be put out. My heart just kind of falls everytime I see them. I feel like I really want to have a fall wedding and I know it just can't happen. It's starting to make me not like my dress anymore. I already have it and I know there is no sense in giving up the dress I love over this. But I can't get over the dream of a fall wedding. I had to get this off my chest.
