alcohol at reception part 2!

Okay girls,
Some of you felt very strongly about having alcohol at the reception, and some said it wasn't a big deal. It isn't a cost issue and I would not have a cash bar-no offense to those of you who are, its personal preference- it was more about family members who never say when before its too late. However, FI and I have decided to just have wine. That way his side of the family won't be offended (religious reasons) and my side of the family (hopefully) won't get too trashed.

We haven't discussed beer yet but I am pretty sure we will stick with just wine. All of my family drinks wine but I have never seen them get drunk on it before.

Seems like a good compromise to me considering our family situation. I hope everyone will dance with just wine.. I know that me and my close friends would so maybe everyone else will too.

  • I think that's a good idea, but I would entertain the idea of beer as well. Some people don't like wine or can't drink it due to allergies, etc.  I would have at least one other option for non-wine drinkers.

If it makes you feel better. My family and friends are BIG drinkers.  Everyone remained under control and no one drank too much at our wedding....we had a top shelf open bar (shots were available).  People were taking shots, drinking hard liquor, and we still had no issues.

  • Depending on the wine, it's still possible to get pretty trashed.  My FI's a big guy, and a pint of barley wine last night left him a bit plastered.

When selecting your beverages, pay attention to the alcohol by volume (ABV), which should be on the label of any alcoholic beverage.  If you stick to beers and wines at around 9-10% ABV or below, it takes a lot more of them to get drunk, and you should be fine.

Sorry your thread got hijacked, it kind of happens.  Glad you've found a compromise that will work for everyone!
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • Sounds like a good solution!  I'd try to do beer/wine also just for preferences, but just wine will be fine, too.
  • Thanks.. I am glad that your family remained under control! It was a hard situation since his family is against drinking (although they will drink wine for special occasions) and my family is full of hard drinkers.

I think this will work perfectly.
  • Thanks for the advice!
  • I love that your are compromising.

Just and FYI... I get way drunker on wine than beer.  I do not even see it coming.   So maybe beer and wine might be a better option (beer tends to have less alcohol).

I also come from a drinking family.  Most people behave themselves and weddings.  I think grandparent and older people ten to make people behave themselves..   Of course there is one or two who take it to another level... but they will do that with just the wine and I would not let them be the deciding factor.

Just saying from personal experience.  I just glad you are compromising..

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Sounds like a great idea to me, but do agree to have another option for those who prefer not to drink or cannot drink wine
  • Sounds like a good compromise.  I think wine is classier than beer, anyway.
  • It is a good compromise, but if people want to get drunk, they can do it just as easily on wine as anything else.  I'm just sayin'.
