How long?

How long should I anticipate the reception lasting?  Right now I'm thinking 4 hours max for eating and dancing...that should be plenty of time, right?  Also, we have to do the cleaning up part before we leave the site...so what's a good way to politely let guests know when the party's over?

Re: How long?

  • 4 hours will be fine, although it might feel a little bit rushed.  My DDs reception was 4 hours, and included a plated dinner.  They said it went by in what seemed like minutes instead of hours.

She had the same situation:  clean up followed the reception.  The DJ announced the last dance of the evening, and then the lights came back up to full.  Everyone got the idea.  The WP all were great and pitched in to collect CPs, etc. and we were out of the room within 30 minutes.
"Trix, it's what they/our parents wanted. Why so judgemental? And why is your wedding date over a year and a half ago? And why do you not have a groom's name? And why have you posted over 12,000 posts? And why do you always say mean things to brides?" palegirl146
  • It seems a bit rushed for my taste, but it can work depending on what traditions you include in the reception.  Just make sure your band leader / DJ can move things along smoothly.
  • Our wedding from the time we walked down the aisle to the last dance was 5 hours. It went by in a flash. On your wedding day I think no matter how much time you have, it will always go by in a flash! There are a ton of people to greet, a ton of traditions to fulfill, and some form of eating thrown into the mix.

As long as you have someone running to some form of a schedule (i.e. cake cutting, garter toss, first dance, last dance, etc) you'll be just fine! If you're concerned about your guests getting the hint, you can always post the approximate reception times on your wedding website.

I wouldn't sweat the small stuff! It's your wedding day! :-)
