Freaking out!

Today I went to a local print shop that a friend recommended. She printed her invites there a few months ago and said they have amazingly low prices and awesome quality. And they do! I went to test print our invites and the color was dead on. I won't have to adjust a thing (which I was concerned about.)

BUT the paper we want is imported and having issues at customs. It hasn't been in for a month and it was supposed to arrive today. It didn't and the owner called and was informed it should arrive in maximum 2 weeks. I don't have two weeks!! We're leaving for NY Feb 3rd and we have to take some of our invites with us!! The owner said the estimate arrival date is Monday and that 2 weeks is just the maximum, so she said to call back Monday as it should be in. But I know how most things go around here.. I wouldn't be surprised if that paper doesn't come in for another month!

The paper we want is a pretty white pearlized paper made specially for the specific printer they have. Apparently this printer is one of the best in the area, because besides the quality, its printing system allows for print jobs to come out ridiculously cheap. But it doesn't work with just any paper.. meaning I can't just buy a similar white pearlized paper and print there. *sigh*

SO now I'm freaking out that the paper might not come in. There are other papers but they're not half as nice. We could go somewhere else but it will cost us more than double. So I guess now we're just looking at 3 options.. 1) Print on the other not so special/ pretty papers, 2) go somewhere else, pay more than double but with the paper we want, or 3) not take invites to the US in February, wait for our paper to come in, pay shipping to send our invites to the US..... :( don't really like any of those options much. And I feel retarded flipping out about PAPER (stupid wedding brain).. but the truth is I really do want these invites to look great and make a nice first impression.

Vent over

I'm confused as to why they don't have the paper in stock if they have the printer for it. I'm also incredibly tired so maybe it's just not clicking in my head. I'd be livid. I think I'd just mail them if it came down to it though. At least you have some heads up so it's not a super huge surprise and you can prepare for it a bit better. Sorry :(

  • Ahh good luck! We are going to do something similar with our U.S. and Peruvian invites b/c shipping from the UK would add up fast when we're talking 200 invites.

Can you wait until Monday to see if they come in, and then decide what to do if they haven't?

  • Hm, originally you weren’t planning to get them on this trip, right? Would it be possible to go back to the old plans and get them at a later time? Is it possible to get them where you live? Can you maybe prepare the envelopes, and ask someone where you are now to pick them up for you, put them in the envelopes and put those in the mail?

  • I'd wait until Monday, if the paper doesn't come in the go with the second choice paper.  OR depending on how much the shipping will be just wait for the paper to come in and pay the extra shipping.

  • Is there a way to bulk mail them to someone in the US if you don't get the paper in time.  I'm not sure if diong a UPS or Fedex package would be much cheaper than just sending them individually.  Then have that person slap on US stamps and mail them from the states and just pay them back for the mailing charges?  That totally stinks that customs is holding up paper!

That might be an option. When we were mailing envelopes to El Salvador for Christmas - it was 99 cents each. But a few weeks ago, abuela mailed a big fat envelope full of papers and smaller envelopes, it was only 1.40. Not sure how it would work mailing from another country to the US though.

I wonder what the hold-up on the paper is. So bizarre.

  • That sucks!! Is it possible to place a rush delivery?

  • omg i would be so livid nati!!! like mekiakoo asked - can they rush order or perhaps do an overnight ship of the paper?!? i understand that when you have an image/vision in your head....you want it to be perfect. and if this is the paper that you want, you should have it!!!
  • Thanks girls for the ideas. I'll go this week to see how much it will cost to ship to the US, just in case. I like the idea of leaving addressed and stamped envelopes with my mom in Feb and ship the invites to her in bulk whenever the paper comes in. I'll still wait til Monday and see what happens.

And yeah really, paper??! C'mon customs! They've been holding it for over a month! I seriously think they overdo it sometimes.
  • I'd still love to know why it's being held up in customs..I mean..what do they think is going to happen with some paper?
