2 random ideas--Yay or Nay?

Ok, so still almost a year until the wedding but I had two random ideas and wanted to know if they are cute or silly/stupid/impractical.

1.  Cake Topper:  My FI is sculpting our cake toppers to look like us, but we had the idea of sculpting us in some kind of flying or floating position and actually suspending the toppers from the ceiling above the cake.  They'd still be the same typical size, but we might be in some kind of flying position holding hands or something.  Then we'd use fishing line to suspend them (our venue lets us hang stuff from the ceiling, and the ceiling isn't abnormally high--probably 12 feet).  Assuming the length of line isn't too long and the weight is good, do you think the topper would swing too much?  Is the whole idea cute or absurd?  We thought it was different, but don't want it to be stupid.

2.  Photo Props:  We're not having a photo booth.  We couldn't really justify the expense.  But I still kind of like having a few props for people (including us) that want to take fun pictures either with their own cameras or the photographer when he is around.

Overall, we want a fun and somewhat quirky atmosphere to our reception but we don't want to go too far and have it become silly or like we're trying too hard, KWIM?

Complete honesty is totally welcome.

  • 1. I think that's fine. My only question is what happens to them when the cake is taken away to be cut and served? Will you keep them hanging or will someone need to take them down?

    2. I think it's fine to have props, just don't force them on people (not saying you would, just something from personal experience). At a wedding we attended, the DJ ran around forcing silly hats and boas on guests on the dance floor who really didn't care for them and it was awkward. As long as they are off to the side and no one feels obligated to wear them, I think it can be fun.

Good point with the first question.  I haven't been to many weddings, so I don't remember, but after the waitstaff cut and serve cake to the guests, is the cake completely removed or is the rest of it left on the table?  I'm not sure how big my cake will be yet, but maybe just the top layer is left?  What about the grooms cake?  Are both cakes just gone after people eat?

For the props, we were just going to set them to the side maybe near the guestbook table or something.  I'd be so embarassed if my DJ forced them on guests.

  • Even if they take the cake, I suppose I could just leave the topper hanging for the rest of the night.  I'll have to think about it.

If you are using fish wire - or something like it. Just CUT it after the cake is carted away.
then you can place them some where at the reception so that they can remain part of the decor.
  • I think both ideas are cute!

Usually both cakes are completely removed for cutting and serving.  The some venues replace the top tier on display, while others pack it up right away.
  • I think they're cute. Not sure about the logistics of the first one but if you can figure it out, go for it. Maybe talk to your baker.
For the second, I love the idea of having an area set off to the side with props and maybe a couple of disposable cameras and backdrop (curtain/sheet).
  • i love the idea about props.  I think a photo booth would be fun but my fiance made a good point that it could take away from people dancing so  we are going to put disposable cameras on the tables and was thinking about having some props available too.  can make  for some great photos
