Carry on plane or ship dress and veil?

I live in Phoenix and am getting married in California. I'm flying Southwest and they don't have first class section or any closets to place hanging garmets in. So, do I carry it on and take the chance in the overhead bin or ship it?Need your suggestions!

Re: Carry on plane or ship dress and veil?

  • Hi! I would NOT ship your dress and veil. Bring it as a carry on. Let the people know at your terminal that you are getting married and are carrying your dress on. They may let you board first and then you can "claim" your overhead bin. I fly SW quite a bit and they have always been accommodating to me. I used to do competitive roller skating and checking our skates and skating outfits was NOT an option and SW flight attendants were always very understanding. HTH!

  • The place I bought my dress said the best way to bring my dress is to wrap it in tissue and roll it up and put it in my carry on. They are actually doing this for me--maybe you could check with your seamstress to see if they have any tips for you. I agree with pp--I wouldn't ship it--it will be within my sight at ALL TIMES!!
  • No way would I ship it. Too many bad things could happen. I'm sure the flight attendants would be willing to help you if you explained the situation.
  • Definitely Carry-on! Did you ever see Meet the Parents??? :)
  • CARRY IT ON!!! Do not ship your dress. If you have to you can lay it over the suitcases in the overhead bins. You can always steam the dress when you get there, but if they lose or damage your dress in the mail then you're going to be up poo creek.
  • Carry on!!!! But I wouldn't roll it up in a carry-on as PP suggested...  That's going to make it super wrinkly.

  • I should probably clarify... if you roll it, you MUST use tissue. My seamstress told me that the plastic actually wrinkles it more, but the tissues prevents it from wrinkling. Again, I would ask someone to do this for you :) Good Luck!
  • A friend of mine carried hers on with her last year, and she just laid it flat in an overhead compartment space, and she folded it in half and laid it on top of other stuff of hers up there, and it was fine. I'll be carrying mine on, and will put mine in the overhead compartment if there aren't any closets. I'm also using 2 garment bags, so just in case one tears, we're fine, and I've found a cleaners on Maui that will steam dresses, so we'll take it there to be steamed too. You might look into finding one near where you're getting married.
