New (and newly engaged)

I wanted to introduce myself, as I am sure I will have questions for ya'll. My name is Jessica. My fiance (whoa that sounds strange) finally popped the question Sunday. We have dated almost three years. We live in Indiana, where he is from. My family is scattered all over the country, but none in the midwest. We had originally talked about doing a wedding in Las Vegas, inviting family and friends. However we have now decided it would be less stressful to have a wedding-moon, with just the two of us. We are currently leaning towards Jamaica, but would consider anywhere tropical. He has an interesting family, and we know they would stress us out WAY to much. His mom is BSC, an alcoholic, and wants to make EVERYTHING about her. His step-mom, whom is no longer married to his dad, is an awesome lady but upset we are not inviting family. And his dad has remarried to someone my FI's age, and they have three kids in high school. (So thats three moms on his side essentially, and one on mine.. Too much stress for us) Now that I babbled about why we made the choice to run off to get married, I look forward to getting tips and information. We are planning on doing a small, informal, reception when we get home. Hopefully everyone will get along. lol

Re: New (and newly engaged)

  • Welcome, good luck with planning and HOLY COW!  Three moms.  That's tough.  At the end of the day, my advice is...do exactly what you want and nothing less (or more).
  • Welcome and congrats! You'll find so many helpful girls here. Good luck with your planning and if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask...someone here always has the perfect suggestion or answer!
  • Wow that sounds like it would be totally stressful!  I agree with PP you have to remind your self that for once it is not about what anyone else wants it is all about you two!  Congrats and happy planning!

  • Welcome! Wow...that does sound like a lot of stress! A DW is probably exactly what you need! We are getting married in Negril, Jamaica in July and I cannot wait! At first, I was skeptical of having a DW but after seeing what my friends are going through (all planning big traditional weddings), I could not be happier with my decision. You will find a lot of helpful girls here and so many inspirations! Good luck with everything!
  • Hi. Welcome and Congrats! These girls are amazing and should be able to help you as much as possible with anything you need. GL

  • Thanks ya'll for the warm welcome! Is there a book or specific instructions on how I should be going about this. I am so lost. I can spend hours looking at resorts in Jamaica, and still not know where we should go. And my FI always responds to my questions with "whatever you want is what I want."

  • Welcome Jessica! Congrats on your recent engagement! You have joined a great group of ladies! My FI and I are also going away just the two of us. We are going to Hawaii for our weddingmoon. We will be there a week and will be married on a beach the third afternoon we are there. We also plan to have an AHR (at home reception) small & informal when we get back, but not until the summer. Stop back whenever you need to vent, talk or ask!
  • To answer your last post - There are wedding desitnation books you can buy, but I have found the ones I have checked into purchasing are about having a ceremony/reception for a group of people at a destination. I spent hours looking too, at hotels and wedding coordinators. . . I narrowed it down to two or three and then did my best to choose one based on what I wanted & cost. And I can relate to the "whatever you want" from FI, he has very few opinions! My help on that is, again, narrow it down and ask for his opinion then, or instaed of asking a large question (like which resort should I pick) ask him the pro/cons of why you can't decide (like would you rather have a hotel with a breakfast or a room with kitchen) sorry for the examples but hope you get the idea?
  • Congratulations and Welcome!!!
