Today's Nestie of the Day is Christi (ms_teach), who was married back in June!! She was married in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Congrats Christi, and so happy that you are our Nestie of the Day!!
1. Give us your name and your hubby's name.
Christi and Ryan
2. What is your Knottie/Nestie name?
ms_teach
3. When did you get married?
June 24, 2011
4. What location did you choose, and what final grade would you give it?
We were married in the Outer Banks of North Carolina at an oceanfront restaurant/hotel in Kill Devil Hills. The OBX was the perfect choice for us and I'd give it an A+. Coming from a teacher, that's a hard grade to earn.
5. What made that location better than all the others you looked at?
We knew we wanted to say in the US so we wouldn't have to deal with passports. Ryan and picked the OBX because it had been our first big vacation location together a few years before. We just loved it there. Our families were pretty spread out and we thought if they were going to have to drive, it might as well be to the beach. We also love, love, love Jockey's Ridge and knew we would get great pictures there.
6. What was your favorite part of your wedding?
It's a toss up. Walking out onto the beach with my dad and seeing Ryan for the first time was such a surreal moment. I had to remind myself to take everything in. Being together on the dunes at the end of the night, wedding dress and all, was also really special. We end every night of vacation there, and being up there as husband and wife felt so awesome.
7. Was there anything your guests LOVED, or are maybe STILL talking about?
We got such great feedback about the little details. People told me no one would notice the details, but our guests certainly did. They also still talk about our pictures and I'm glad we splurged for the photographers we used.
8. Everyone has one..... what was your wedding day snag?
We forgot to take pictures with the Knottie Knot. Bummer, but we did it during our Trash the Dress. We used an ipod for our music. The speaker we rented had a bad cord that made the lyrics very soft for our first dances. It wasn't a big deal and we danced anyway, but it wasn't quite as emotional without the words. The dry cleaner also lost my dress starts while steaming the dress, but I wasn't using them so it didn't really matter.
9. Did the people who initially opposed your DW ever change their minds and decide to attend? Give us details.
Meh, not really. The people who mattered supported us and the guests who were able to come had a great vacation. I think you have to have thicker skin to be a DW bride.
10. Were there any "non-negotiable" things you HAD to have at your wedding?
I had to have real flowers, my dad, and great food. I also wanted a bright blue sky and puffy white clouds. I'm glad mother nature cooperated on that one.
11. Did you have any trouble flying with your dress? How did you do it?
We drove (13 hours!) and put that sucker in the trunk on top of our luggage.
12. What was your favorite thing about the time you spent on the DW board?
The DIY ideas were great, but my favorite part of this board is the support and friendship. I still talk with a handful of the girls almost every day, even with our hectic lives. I hope we can watch each other raise families and get old and gray.
13. What advice would you give to those who are just starting to plan their DW's?
Decide what you (and your husband to be!) want. Decide how that fits in with what your family/friends expect and how much you're going to let them influence you. Then go from there. Make a list of the very most important things to you and stick to them. When you get stressed, take a break. And get an awesome photographer. The pictures will be so worth it.
14. What advice would you give to those whose big day is almost here?
Relax! Enjoy the home stretch and let the things you didn't have time to do go. Make a list and stick to it. Oh, and delegate tasks for the day of.
15. Be honest.... what did you forget at home?
Nothing. I had too many lists going for that to happen.
17. Anything you wish you HADN'T done?
No, honestly. I would do it all again.
18. Do you regret doing a DW?
Not at all. I got to spend two weeks on the beach with my husband, and several days of that with family and friends. We made great memories and will be able to go back every year to celebrate in a beautiful, relaxing spot. I can't wait to take our kids there someday too.
19. Did you have a separate honeymoon after you left your DW location?
No, we stayed for two weeks and were married on the weekend in the middle. After 14 days away, we were ready to come back home.
20. How did you keep your guests from wanting to spend all their time with you after the wedding?
Ours worked out so that most of our guests came the week before and then left the Sunday or Monday after our Friday wedding so we still had the second week for just the two of us. We did spend quite a bit of time the first week with our guests though.
21. If you were going to do a "DW vow renewal" and money was no object, where would you go and what would it look like?
The pictures from Saint Lucia are so pretty, so probably there. I don't want to even THINK about planning again though!
22. So... how's married life treating you? Was it difficult to adjust to being a wife?
Married life is bliss. We moved in together after we got engaged, so we had lived together for about a year and a half. I think that adjustment was much harder than being married. It does feel different though, much deeper. I mean, we're MARRIED and he's my husband. It's a good feeling. I love seeing him wear his ring. Sending Christmas cards out together was fun too.
23. Anything else you think would be helpful for the DW Knotties to know/hear?
Enjoy the planning as much as you can and don't let the little things stress you out. There were things we had to wait to finalize in the days before our wedding, but that's part of a DW. I wouldn't trade spots with you and do that part again, but I'd do our one day all over in a heart beat. Keep your eyes on the prize and remember this is about a marriage, not just a wedding. And be nice to each other!! I've made some great friends from this board because we went through it together. It's been a great experience watching our married loves evolve together too.
