Destination Weddings Discussions

Carribean in August...

Hi everyone!  I am not having a destination wedding but I was told I should try asking on this board advice about honeymooning in the Carribean during the end of August..

I know it is hurricane season but was wondering if anyone has gone to any of the islands considered in the hurricane belt during that time and what their experience was?

We really were considering St. Lucia or the Caymen Islands.  I think Bermuda may be out of the belt ... any reviews?  Also I know the best place to avoid hurricanes in the hurricane season (so they say) is Curacao.  Has anyone been?

Any information would be greatly appreciated :)

Re: Carribean in August...

  • Yea, I also heard about the weather at end of August.  We ended up choosing Aug 7 in St.Lucia, with a noon ceremony, which should give us an awesome wedding just ahead of the rainy hurricane season.

From other brides, I've heard that they didn't experience hurricanes, but it did rain on and off. I also hear that when it rains its quick and dries up quickly also.

I found this excerpt from a website regarding August weather.  I attached a link to the site.

"During August, rain is most likely to occur around 8:00 AM, and least likely to occur around 11:00 AM. In St. Lucia during August, thunderstorms -- when they occur -- are most likely sometime around 5:00 PM. "
  • I spent two years living and working on Cruise ships and went to both the Caribbean and Burmuda.  It was honestly a toss up is we hit bad weather in the Caribbean but the earlier you in August you go the better.

Burmuda will be safer bet and it's one of my most favorite places.  There is so much to do and you can get from one end of the Island to the other in a couple of hours.  The beaches in Burmuda are the best of any Island I have been to.  It's much more expensive than the Caribbean but if you can afford it, go for it.  It so clean in Burmuda and its pretty safe to walk the streets late at night.  Not always reccomended on some of the other Island we went to.

We used to all go to the beach and camp out under the stars all night.  Ahh, memories.

I loved Cayman, but there wasn't as many bars and resturants open at night.  Swimming with the Sting rays is still my favorite memory.

Long story short, if you can afford it and really want to avoid bad weather (although there is no guarentee) I would go to Burmuda.

I got married August 14th in Antigua this past year.  We almost got hit by 2 hurricanes on the honeymoon portion of our trip.  Once on the 16th and again on the 20th.  Luckily both got downgraded to tropical storms or depressions.  We got a ton of rain, but it was at night and cleared up to be beautiful days by the morning.  We had a room right on the beach and had to be moved prior to the storm on the 16th as a precaution.

I got engaged in St. Lucia in July 2008 and the weather was decent for most of our trip.  We did have brief afternoon showers on most days and I remember our last 2 nights there, it poured.

We were also in Jamaica in June 2007 and I remember pretty heavy afternoon rain nearly every day.

Between the 3 places, the overall most beautiful weather we had was in Antigua (and we were there for 2 weeks) despite the fact that we were nearly hit by 2 hurricanes!  Smile

From what I've read, the only truly safe places out of the hurricane belt in the Caribbean are the ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao.)
  • I live on St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands and late August early September is the prime hurricane season here.  Luckily since I've lived here we've been spared but of the ones in the past that have hit, it was during that time.  As far as rain, we get most of our rain showers in the morning and everything is clear by noon and you would never know it even rained.
