Destination Weddings Discussions

newly engaged

Hello,
I have been engaged for a few weeks and picking a destination is already proving to be stressful.  What I picture in my head is renting a beach front house somewhere that has a spot in the backyard for a big wedding tent, and hosting the reception there.  I am not too partial on the location (currently live in Texas but between my fiance and myself we have family and friends in Colorado, New York and the Northeastern part of the country).
Any ideas/suggestions on how to go about doing this?  I have been googling things like crazy but haven't gotten anywhere yet!
Thank you all :)

Re: newly engaged

  • Welcome to the board and congrats on your engagement. Are you thinking a warm tropical beach, or something like the Jersey shore (not to be put off by the negative connotation of that phrase now with the MTV show - there are really nice parts)?
  • Just wanted to say, welcome to the board! I would recommend a travel agent, to help you narrow down what you're looking for. Choosing the location really is the tough part! Good luck planning!

  • Welcome and congrats!  Choosing a location was the hardest part (so far)...it took us almost a year!!!  (we had planned a long engagement so that allowed us to take our time)

I found it much easier to decide on a spot once we figured out we wanted domestic v. international (ie most Caribbean islands, Mexico, etc).  Then we considered time of year that we were planning to get married and that really left us with Florida....we wanted the tropical feel so Key West it is and we're very happy with our decision.

If you are at all interested in Key West, I know that there are TONS of B&Bs, Inns and private homes for rent that might fit what you're looking for in terms of atmosphere.  Talk w/ a TA or check out vrbo.com.
  • Outer Banks would be nice too!  Maybe Hilton Head?  So many locations to choose from!  We knew we wanted an all  inclusive tropical resort and it STILL took us forever to choose!

    Welcome to the boards!

  • Hi and welcome! I don't have much advice except to say make sure you check out www.vrbo.com and www.homeaway.com then you can look at houses at a bunch of different locations. I would check out houses in all the places you might want to go and since you're not partial to a certain locale then when you find the perfect property you'll have a location! GL!
