I'm not a fan of any of the traditional readings. We're going with Native American one and a poem from my grandmother's favorite poet - kahlil gibran.

I hate head tables. I like sweetheart's though. Makes it seem a little more intimate - but I'll be sure to not let FI get up and leave me alone - I didn't think about that!

I too dislike receiving lines, and the videographer going around to each table.

I've already put almost all line dances on the DO NOT play list - aka chicken dance, electric slide, cha cha slide. The only one I kinda like is the Cupid Shuffle - so I'm thinking about having that play - or at least be ok to play especially if requested.

Cake smashing is not ok in my book. Especially if your husband is an a$$ and smashes into your face with a fork...yah, I've seen that one. Thankfully the bride didnt' get stabbed in the face - it was close though.

Not a fan of dry weddings or cash bars. I also don't like the anniversary dance. Not seeing my grandfather get to get up and dance b/c his wife isn't there to share it with him, is kind of depressing. It'd probably be better if my grandmother hadn't passed. We're doing a twist off instead. Nothing like a friendly competition for a small prize to get people on the dance floor!

I went to a wedding in November that had the dollar dance.  It went on FOR. EV. ERRRRRRR.

Apparently it's a "Ukrainian" tradition, but my MIL said she never heard of it. ;)

I don't like DJs that pull out the props.  This is a wedding ,not a Sweet 16 party.

I've been dollar dances.  They are common in Pittsburgh.  A lot of the time is is a family tradition.  I'm not doing it at my wedding though because I see it as a waste of time.

Yeah... there was a dollar dance at my first wedding. My mother told the DJ to do it, and I had no idea until it started. It's pretty common here though- the past 5 weddings I've been to have had it. Usually it's 1-2 shorter slow songs... if it's a long line, 3. The guys usually get a kick out of it, because they'll go dance w/the groom.

Huge bridal parties. I don't know 20 people well enough to ask them to stand next to me! 4 girls was pushing it! Any more.... phew.

We're doing the sweetheart table because we're cute and cheesy like that.

And yeah, the readings... please no more of the same ones. Something that means something to you!

The dollar dance...or the money dance is very common in Filipino Weddings.  Although I'm not doing it because it takes too much time and I don't want anyone pinning anything on my dress.  I don't really mind it at other people's weddings 'cause it's kind of nice to get one on one time with the bride/groom on the dancefloor even if it's just for a few seconds.

Ours was family tradition, if that helps. The only reason I didn't go all bridezilla was because it did give me a chance to dance with my uncles/friends/his family that I wouldn't normally have had.  (Or been able to tolerate for a full song...)

I like little girls in colored dresses, I think they look pretty and like little girls.

I esp. hate dresses FG dresses which look like the bride's dress.  I saw this once IRL, a friend from a summer job.  They were from a different social circle then I.  I found it very strange that you would want a little girl to look like a bride and not a little girl.

I was at a wedding once that had money dances. yes plural. It was a tradition for the brides family. When I tell you that there were only like 5-8 normal songs played, Im not kidding. The entire reception was all a certain kind of ethnic music. It was so akward and unfun for people who were not that nationality. The last hour was the only time that regular dance music was played.

Fair enough.  I feel like FI's daughter will tell me what she wants to wear, since she is a diva-in-training.  I was in David's bridal for a fitting when the FG was trying on her dress and they were so happy it matched the bride's dress prefectly.  Creepy, but I don't mind a little girl in white.

Just getting on TK and it's almost 3:30, yep been THAT kind of day.

this was a great poll as I now know how peeps feel about these things.   Here's where I (and Fi thankfully are at)
    - no tosees
    - no receiving line
    - we have 3 bms 3 guys, we aren't into the circus with 20 person bridal parties, plus I don't think I have that many close friends lol!
    - no cheesy line dances/props
    - no looong toasts- we told the best man we will cut your a** off if you keep going lol
    - are doing a sweetheart table, but are seating our bridal party with their S/Os
    - no cake smashing, it will be a solo honeymoon for me and how dare you mess up my makeup!
    - 5 hour open bar :)
    - yes to cool options for non drinkers- we have a few recovering alcs and I don't want any of those people to feel awkward (typically they wouldn't but they are super close to me so)

thanks ladies for talking about readings and music. I am getting into this part now and needed some ideas. Coming to here comes the bride wasn't getting me excited. so maybe I'll do Canon in D for me- Catholics are usually a little limited in their music choices so any other ideas are appreciated!

Cmrpsu--if you need music help, let me know.  I've been a cantor since i was about 12, so I have an arsenal of wedding music.

My church is being pretty lenient about music... as long as it's instrumental and fits in with the theme of a wedding, they are happy with it.  If you want it sung, it has to be liturgical.  But there are still some beautiful liturgical songs you can use for a wedding.

I confess we are having a receiving line.  My mom insists and it's not worth the fight, I pick my battles and this was not one of them.  It will just be the two of us and our parents.
The reason being is we know people will come to the church to see us get married who are not invited, if we just go to tables etc we will not be able to see them.  At least that's what my mom says.  Also the church HAS to start no later then 2:30 so this eats some time so we can start a bit later as well.

We will ten shuttle the Brits to my aunt's house for iced tea, lemonade and other non boozy drinks while we take pictures at the Cricket Club.

    thanks RA!

ahh i totally forgot about the dollar dance. My dad's side of the family is Polish and they don't do it but I have seen it before at eastern european weddings. Since my grandparents are gone I said no way to that or any polkas. Yes POLKAS! Also standard fare at a Polish wedding, my dad keeps teasing me asking me what polkas we will play. He wants the "She's Too Fat" polka- yes that's a real song!!

Maybe I will have to dance one with him :)

Yes. We did. And my poor, super-pregnant friend sat in the back and had to wait outside for everyone else to go through before she could (we did it right after the ceremony on our way in to cocktail hour).

This was one of about five "I'm only asking for one thing"s that she wanted during the process. In retrospect I really wish we hadn't had to do it, but my parents hosted the entire wedding... so she got what she wanted.

Re: The money dance.  This is HUGE at Filipino weddings (which my SIL is), so although I would have thought it was tacky and awful at my own wedding, people were begging to do it at my brother and SILs.  They did make out like bandits, and were wearing many intricately-folded accessories made form money (sashes, crowns, necklaces, bacelets) by the end of the two songs it lasted.  I was pretty cool with it except for the part where I had to follow my brother's friend who pinned the dollar on his crotch.  Sigh.

As for my own pet peeves:
-Head tables (no one can talk to each other)
    -Cheesy DJs
-Not explaining isoteric stuff in your ceremony (like, if you're having a traditional Hindu wedding, I love an elaborate program that explains what I'm seeing, otherwise I feel totally out of it and awkward)
    -Receiving lines
    -Crappy food
-I agree on the "love is patient" reading
    -Cash bars
    -Choreographed anything
    -Huge bridal parties (sorry nicole!)
-And, this is totally a matter of personal taste, flame away, but cascading bridal bouquets.  Every time I see one I wonder whether it's suddently 1987 again.  Sorry!

    >>Huge bridal parties (sorry nicole!) <<

none taken! I am lucky to be close to so many people. It is a South Philly thing, I guess because we all live on top of each other ;)

I also had Corinthians as our second reading, we liked it so we picked it. There is also a limitation to music and readings at our Church. We had to pick out of a book or readings to pick for the sacrament of marriage, so apparently it does have to do with marriage!

    -cash bar/dry weddings
    -the tosses
-announcing cutting the cake and the cake smashing. I didn't want our party to stop so there were about 5 people who saw us cut the cake!

Cmr- I walked down the aisle to Handel's Watermusik (Allegro Maestro).  My girls walked in to Canon in D, so Watermusik gave enough fanfare and change in music that the guests were able to figure it all out.

I love Watermusik, though- it's one of my favorite works (yes, the entire thing).
