Destination Weddings Discussions

Is destination wedding in Florida too selfish?

I know what they say: "its your wedding, do what you want".  But my fiance has agreed to do a destination wedding just because its what I want.  He doesn't want to inconvenience his friends or family, who live in Illinois.  It has been looming around us and we have to make a decision soon.  What do you think, is a destination wedding to Floriday asking too much of our guests?  I heard one couple just tell me that it is forcing people where to take their vacation for the year.  Is that true? Please help!

  • It's not forcing anyone to do anything! They can chose to not come, but if they do, don't be upset with them! We are getting married in St Thomas and none of FI's family can come, we aren't upset (although I'm sure FI is a little upset) but that's also why we decided to have a reception a couple of weeks after we return! It is your wedding day so do what you two want!

  • Those are all valid concerns, but I don't think anybody is being forced to take their vacation because of your wedding.  If people attend your wedding, it's because they want to be there to support you on your big day.  Florida is an easy flight and still within the continental US.

I think you need to ask yourself how you envision your wedding day.  If the idea of sunny Florida fills you with joy and the idea of an Illionois wedding fills you with angst, then the choice becomes clear.

Also, there is always the option of hosting an informal at home reception to celebrate your wedding when you return to Illinois.
  • Well I think that is why I am hesitating.  Because my Fiance is doing it to make me happy, but I know he really would rather have it in Chicago. I feel like one of us is going to be dissapointed either way.
