October 2012 Weddings

In need of a theme! and i don't want anything related to fall... please help!

So my wedding is less than 6 months away at this point and all thats left to get are invitations and general decor. I'm going to tell you my color palette and a bit about the wedding and I'd love to hear your ideas!

Date: October 6th, 2012 in Connecticut on the water, so the weather should be a bit of an Indian Summer feel.

Colors: Navy, champagne, and a light rose pink.

Feel: its an evening wedding that is more formal than not, but not exactly black tie. The guys will be wearing khaki colored dress pants with navy blazers (the classic brooks brothers look)

Venue: its an old mansion on a large field, on the ocean, with gorgeous gardens on either side. it is on the smaller side for mansions though. 135 person wedding

Bridesmaids dresses are already purchased, they are knee length one shoulder, navy satin. very chic. Bouquets will be pale pale pink mums in almost a pom pom shape with navy ribbon around the stems.

The venue makes me feel like the movie "the secret garden" meets great gatsby. I thought a garden theme would work, but i'm not interested in spending much on flowers for decor so that wouldn't work. I'm picturing lots of off white candles on the tables around a center tall pillar candle that is in a tall champagne vase. with the pale pink flowers, or just their petals, strewn about the table. Navy table clothes.

My wedding planner and bridal party keeps telling me i have to pic a theme and i do think it would make my final steps easier, but i'm torn.

any ideas?

  • I'm getting married a week after you, also in CT.  I love your color scheme.  I never would have thought of that. Personally I dont think you have to have a theme but what do i know! :-)  I like your thoughts about the candles.  Are you perhaps getting married at St. Clements?  As soon as  you said on the water with a Secret Garden/Great Gatsby feel thats what i thought of.
  • You don't HAVE to pic a theme.  It sounds like you have a pretty good idea of what you want already.  However, with your style, color choices, and venue, it would be perfect to go with a rustic style or vintage theme.  This would help you develop a little more and decide if you want lots of candles, doilys for a lace feel,  or tin cans with greeneries in them.  Good luck! :)

  • I think your venue and color combination sounds beautiful.   I don't think you necessarily need a 'theme'   Get invitation that include your color and decor in your color pallete as well.  There are sites that you can enter those colors and get examples of how others have incorporated them.  Make sure what ever the two of you pick, it has to do with you and you are not picking it because someone is telling you need a 'theme'.     Hope this helps.  Good luck and stick around!

  • Kimm - do you know of a specific site that you enter your colors and get examples of how others used?  i loved to be able to use a website like that.

    thanks!
  • I agree with PP's, you certainly dont have to have a theme. I am using very similar colors - Navy, White, and Coral. My venue is also on the water.  My "theme" is nautical b/c I love the water and boating. I will be arriving by boat. Maybe you could do like the new preppy/chic/nautical look? Perfect colors and feel/look for it. It would def fit with the guys outfits. I am probably going to do the same thing with my guys! I just have to get FI on board with the blazers! lol

    Well, good luck!

  • If they're wanting you to pick a theme to make it easier for them to see your vision, the vintage idea with lace or doilies might be nice. Or what about a soft romance theme? I'd picture that with the white candles and maybe adding a touch of lace here and there if you like lace. But maybe not as much as a "vintage" feel. I really like your color combo!
  • You don't have to have a theme.  Perfect Palette (<clicky) can give you some ideas for the rest of your decor.  She might not have the exact colors but she usually has pretty close.  I would just play with the natural beauty of your venue.  Your wedding planner should be able to help you with that.
I didn't choose a theme, it just kind of developed out of my color scheme and venue and my hope that the leaves are changed but not dropped. It's a fall theme but I'm making it fairly subtle.
      I hope that helps.

  • Thank you all! I couldn't agree more, i think they just want to be able to set it to a theme so its easier for them to picture and suggest.  I've been describing it as soft romantic elegance lol i have no clue. I think i'll jsut keep on keeping on and see how it turns out!  I'll definitely check out that site too, thanks for the tip!
  • The Perfect Pallete was the site i was thinking of but couldn't remember the name until CFM suggested it.  soft romantic elegance is definitely something your WC should be able to work with.

  • I definitely agree you don't need a theme. Your color combination sounds gorgeous. I love your centerpiece idea, and mine is almost exactly the same. I bought large hurricane vases. And am putting a pillar candle in them and surrounding it by votive candles and rose petals. I think if you pick a theme, you'll focus on that too much and it will become complicated. Just pick decorations in your colors.

  • I'm glad I'm not the only "non-fall" October bride! I've told FI that I don't want ANY leaves (except those that have naturally fallen on the ground) anywhere near our wedding!

I think you should just tell your planner you don't want to pick a theme for the sake of having a theme, because that really defeats the purpose of having one. A theme should represent your interests as a couple, like fishin's nautical theme. FI and I are going with a classic amusement parks (1910s and 1920s) theme - our colors are dark red and gold, and we're using a lot of gold-leafed accents and a carousel horse motif, along with lots of little touches throughout the reception that make it clear what the theme is.

  • I agree with the above, you don't need a theme if you don't want one.  It sounds like you have got a good idea of the colors and the feel, you just need your helpers to catch your vision and quit insisting you need something you don't.
  • Agreed you don't need a theme, it's a wedding not a child's birthday party.  FWIW my wedding's not fall-related either... we had to bump it back from May, so if anything it's spring themed!  And if you want lots of flowers, there's sites where you can get silk ones in bulk for cheap.
That said, if the only reason you need a theme is because other people cant picture your wedding, then thats their problem.
