Good News/Bad News?!

So, my Ph.D. advisor was in Japan for 2 weeks attending a conference and giving seminars.  He presented my data in Japan, but sadly I did not get to go to Japan LOL!  Today was his first day back in the lab, and I had a bunch of new data to show him.  After I showed him my latest work, he says oh by the way there's a conference in Sept that you should go to.  It's in Monterey, CA.  So, at first I was really excited!  I usually go to a big neuroscience conference every year, but this year the conference (it's in New Orleans this year) starts the day after our wedding so I can't go and I was pretty bummed about this.  The conference in Monterey is much smaller, but it'll still be a good place to present my work.

However, there is one problem.  The conference starts 2 days after FI's cousin's wedding which is being held an hour away from our hometown (so about 4 hours from where we live).  I can't fly out of my hometown (Albany, NY) because it's a very small airport and flights are crazy $$.  So, I'd have to go to the wedding on the 7th and then drive back to Rochester on the 8th (3 hour drive) so that I could fly out from here on the 9th.

In not so concerned about that, I can make that work.  What I'm most worried about, is that I will be 3,000 miles away for 5 days when our wedding is about a months away!!!  I'm so happy that I had the foresight to hire a wedding coordinator who will be picking up the planning process in the last 2 monts!

I guess going to a work related conference is one way to get your mind off of wedding related stress...but hopefully this won't create even more stress!!!

  • I'm sure it'll be fine- like you said you hired a DOC and you can always make a point to get some extra stuff done before you go (or assign things to your FI) to ease your mind.

  • I think you'll be ok.  It's good that you are finding out about it now and can plan for it instead of finding out about it a couple of months before the wedding - that would cause a major freak out for me!

It might be nice to step away from it all and have your energy and focus towards something else, too.

  • Yeah LOL.  The other good thing that my boss told me today was that the summer student who has worked with me in our lab for the past 2 years will be coming back again this summer.  Thank god!!!!!  I've got a bunch of experiments that he could help me with.  He shouldn't mind being my slave again this summer, I reward him in baked goods LOL!

The conference is also being held at a conference facility in a state park right next to the beach!  The website says that the nickname of the place is "a refuge by the sea" LOL!

Ah! This was suppose to be my first year going to the SFN conference too! But I'm getting married the 13th :( Not gonna lie I was a little upset to be missing New Orleans too.

  • I love SfN...so many networking opportunities and so many big name speakers.  I've gone for the last 4 years: DC, Chicago, San Diego, and DC again and I totally forgot that every 3rd year the conference is in Oct instead of Nov.  By the time I thought to check the SfN dates, it was too late!  I've never been to New Orleans either and that would have been really fun!  Plus, I could have met up with a fellow Knottie!

My word of advice for when you do go to SfN (yay your first meeting will be in San Diego, which is so beautiful.  That convention center is right on a marina and you can sit outside and watch the boats go by) is to not get overwhelmed by the 30,000 + people at that conference.  SfN is huge!  If you do your homework before and use the meeting planner online, you will be much less overwhelmed.  Plus, I think there might be a seminar for first time SfN attendees now, that would have helped so much the first year I went and walked around aimlessly and confused LOL!

  • FI and I are guessing the the opening game of the NFL season will be Packers vs Giants on a Thursday night this year. If so, we'll be making the 8 hour drive to see them play and will be out of town for 3 days the month before the wedding. I know it's not the same, but I'm looking forward to doing something non-wedding related!
