Cable-less?

Has anyone cancelled their cable?  JEGs and I are thinking about going this route to save money.  We are running into the problem of he REALLY loves the Phillies, and we can't figure out how he's going to watch the games.

Anyone run into this?  Any solutions?

I'm pretty sure I would face mutany if I tried to cancel the cable.  Though it would definitely help with expenses A LOT.

The people I know who cancelled their cable either go to bars or friends' houses to watch the games.  A lot of the apps they have out now aren't the same as watching a game, and MLB.tv isn't that great. Plus you have to give them money.

You can watch games at our house!

We still have cable but cancelled all our premium channels.  Honestly, I think nowadays with hulu, netflix, etc., you really don't miss too much.  If there is a way you can get a basic package with On Demand, you can get even more.

Can you just get the most basic simple package?  No premium channels, no OnDemand, no DVR, etc.  I know thats hard to get out of Comcast with the relentless sales pitch, but worth a try.

Otherwise he can watch online or at a bar.  But, if he goes to a bar/restaurant will he just spend the same $ on drinks when you add it all up?

FI and I just had this convo the other day. We decided we are cancelling just the premium channels.

My dad and I have talked about this.
I live at home and dad talks to me about $ issues every once and a while.

He wants to get rid of the DVR I am having a hard time parting with it bc I am hardly home when TV I want to watch is on, but thats first to go. Then premiums...

We looked into MLBtv.  It's $100 a year, which isn't bad, but the Phillies are blacked out due to be the local team that is provided by the local service.  They will show them as archives, but you have to wait 24 hours.  And that just sucks.

We thought about going down to the absolute basic, but with all the recent, unexpected finances we've had, we are trying to cut as much fat as possible.

I would go basic cable and subscribe to netflix which I think i sonly like $10/mo?  You can watch tv shows on netflix from a PS3 (if you have one) or from your computer.  My FI signed a contract with comcast for some reason so we're locked into our rate for the next year.  When the contract expires, we're cancelling everything but basic cable and subscribing to netflix.

We have the most basic cable from comcast possible. It's like pulling teeth to try to convince my dad to get DVR... even though it's only another $5 a month.

If there's ever a game on that we can't get, we just go to the bar to watch it. (very rare, even though it's usually the Steelers)

We cut cable! We got a digital atena, so we get a few channels. We get 3 and 10 (the guy at best buy said that a lot of people have trouble getting channel 6 and I guess we are one of those people). There are a handfull of other channels that come in that aren't regular channels. We plan on hooking our wii up to the tv so we can stream netflix and watch shows on hulu. Saving the extra $$ each month is nice.

We are in the same situation. FI is dying to cancel cable but I can't give up my Phillies. We have netflix & hulu that stream right on the tv. But alas we are a slave to cable until I can get my Phillies another way. We did cut out premium channels and the sports package, which was basically just NFL redzone.

I know that is not much help, but I have researched it extensively and can't figure another way to get the Phils, and there is no way I am going to the bar to watch 100+ games.

As a former cable company employee....
    What MH said.

Make friends with those neighbors.   Offer to throw them $20 each month to make their wifi public, and give you one piece of coax for the living room TV, or through the attic and down.   done.

We don't have cable either. FI bought a cheap computer that we have connected to our only tv and we watch Hulu and Netflix on it. Neither of us are sports fans though, so I can't help you there.

Between all of the sporting events the he watches, we'll never be cutting cable.  We could, since I have access to MLB.tv (out of market!) but he'd never go for it.  Live sports if probably 60-70% of what we ever watch on tv.

Can't you watch the baseball games live on the computer? I'm pretty sure I remember doing this at work during play off's.

You can't watch regular season games (legally) when you're inside the market.  However, it's possible during the playoffs that the network airing the game had a web stream, but I don't think that's common.

Have you looked into Sling Box?  When we were on the HM, and hubs was setting his fantasy baseball lineup on the hotel computer, he started talking to a tampa bay fan next to him.  He said he gets all the games through his phone/computer on slingbox.

I believe SlingBox essentially streams your TV content to your device (computer/ipad/etc).  She'd still need to have an active cable feed broadcasting the game.

LadyBug-- first off, welcome back :)  Secondly, we have looked into Sling box and having the other one at his parents house.  Problem is, we think whatever TV it's connected to there is the same channel we have to watch.  His 90 year grandmother is more of a SciFi fan, then a baseball fan, if you catch my drift...

We have never had cable. We have the free local stations so the games r on there most weekends. During the week we put on 1210. We wanted cable for this season but fios isn't available to us.
