H1N1 vaccine post #2

I know the poll is supposed to be just yes or no, but since people were posting some concerns, I thought I'd start a new thread for that.  First of all, my opinions - feel free to express your own.  Getting a vaccine is a personal choice, I just feel that people should be educated, rather than hearing a bunch of stuff from biased news reports or YouTube videos, before making their decision.1.  This vaccine did not come out super fast, it came out with the same speed as every other seasonal flu vaccine.2. If they had identified H1N1 sooner, it would be in the seasonal flu shot and you wouldn't even know you were getting it.  If you don't have an adverse reaction to the seasonal shot, you should be fine getting H1N1 because the components that people are concerned about are the same.3.  The risk of something serious happening to you is extremely small, and just as likely as a side effect from any other medication, food additive, etc.  You just can't predict it.4.  It's not just about vaccinating yourself, it's about protecting the population.  You don't even realize how many immune-compromised people you come into contact with every day.5.  The flu and chicken pox can both be fatal.  The chicken pox vaccine was created because if you don't get chicken pox as a child, it is extremely serious later in life, so it's no less important than any other vaccine.Basically, I feel like if you would normally get the seasonal flu shot, you shouldn't be concerned about this one.  If you have other objections to vaccines, that's fine.

  • I always get sick with the flu shot. H1N1 would probably make me sick too.
    Me: 26 DH: 32
    TTC since 08/2010
Anovulatory since at least 12/2010 (probably longer, unDx)
    Dx PCOS 3/2012
    SA 5/25/12--normal
    June 2012--50mg clomid+TI--BFN
    July 2012--50mg clomid+Ovidrel+TI--BFN, lining at 5mm
    August 2012--5mg femara+Ovidrel+TI
  • Well it's interesting that they say only children with impaired immune systems are supposed to get it, considering almost all of the children that have died in my area were otherwise healthy.  Also, one of the reasons they target children is because they are ideal for spreading the virus - so if they are all vaccinated, the at-risk populations will be less likely to get the disease.I do think it's odd that Obama isn't vaccinating his kids, but it's a personal choice, like I said.  Whether he, or any other celebrity, chooses to vaccinate has no influence on my choice.

  • I never get the regular flu shot either. Therefore, no H1N1 shot for me.There are also unknown side effects that I would rather not take the chance with.If after a few weeks it seems to be working, then I might consider getting it.But the media also plays a huge part in scaring people into getting this done.JMO!

  • One of the side effects of the flu vaccine can be flu-like symptoms, which does suck.  I can see not getting it if you have that reaction, and you're not high-risk or living/working with people who are.

  • Agreed, the media hype is very tiresome.  They are playing it up way too much.  It was scary at first, when we didn't know if this would be like the next plague, but now that it's turned out to be fairly mild, except for the fact that it targets healthy young people, I think the media needs to calm down.

  • As you know, FI and I are very lighthearted about lots of stuff---but we actually had to buckle down and make a decision b/c our pediatrician was shoving down our throats that we NEED to get Liv vaccinated..... we said no thank you many times. Liv is suseptible for re-occurring ear infections so we are focused more on that at the moment. she has to get tubes in her little ears...I also personally think, that in that tube with the Flu shot is inserted some sort of tracking device/ mind control chip ....... Or WORSE---the T-Virus!!!!!

  • And then there is my EXTREME religious view that if Liv DOES contract H1N1 and she gets sick and dies (Worse case ) it's God's plan and I know she is going to Heaven. God blessed me with her and he obviously sees parenting potential in me to make the best decisions for her ...... so yea--that's my thought/ belief.

  • Lol @ T-virus - would you believe we were JUST talking about that at lunch?! sucks about the pushy doctor - I think their place is to inform and let you choose.  Also, sorry about the tubes, one of the girls I used to work with has gone through so much drama with them, because her son has had to get them replaced several times. :(

  • Interesting information, and a lot of view points...my biggest issue is the lack of people's concern, common courtesy and health knowledge. There is a great # of people not washing their hands, sneezing and coughing on others, etc. So I do see the point to protect yourself from and for the general population.Too bad there isn't a common sense vaccine!
  • Ferdy - actually, we were talking about 'The 4th Kind', with Milla Jovovich (spelling?) and the other gamer dork in my lab and I started talking about the Resident Evil movie, and then the games.  Another girl tried to come in by mentioning the Rage Virus - we quickly corrected her on that one.And lvasilen - OMG no kidding.  All these people sneezing/coughing all over the place (I take public transportation...eww), and people who come to work knowing they're sick, or send their kids to school because they don't want to take off work...gee, thanks.

  • Laura, You do make great points. I'm right there with you on almost all of them but my aunt (my mom's idential twin) did develop Guillian-Barre from the 1970's version (It's proven http://www.cdc.gov/vaccinesafety/emergency/swineflu.htm). She gradually go better but she could do nothing but lay around for a year and a half. This is why I'm not comfortable getting it because we do share genes. H1N1 are very differnt and the H1N1 vaccine is not NOT the same as the seasonal flu vaccine. I'm an educated microbiologist and for all vaccines but I just don't feel comfortable with this one considering the history of the 1970s version and my family history. Thanks for the great post!
  • I don't think it's fair to talk about people's "common sense" just because they're choosing NOT to get the vaccine.Just like Laura said in the beginning of the post, getting a vaccine is a personal choice. If you choose to get it that's fine, but it doesn't mean that everyone else should follow suit.

  • Kmason - I am talking about common sense of covering your mouth, not sneezing on others, washing your hands and staying home if you are sick.I think the vaccine is everyone's option and choice, I did not get one.
  • Too bad there isn't a common sense vaccine! HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!

  • I *think* lvasilen meant common sense in terms of washing hands and covering your mouth, not getting the vaccine.  That's how I read it, anyway!microkelly - I completely understand your choice.

  • I read it differently. In that case I completely agree.I am constantly washing my hands and using sanitizer.  Pretty sure my hands are drying up like a prune!

  • I'm choosing not to get it, but it is not because I am not well informed.  Believe me I've looked into it and decided not to.  And yes, people need more common sense with washing their hands, etc.  This year I am going crazy with hand sanitizer... maybe too crazy. haha
  • Clash - This is the first year that it occurred to me to use hand sanitizer on the handle of my grocery basket!  I'm definitely more aware of those kinds of things now, I notice when everyone around me is wiping their snot all over everything...ugh....
