Videographer?

Is it realy that important to have one?  I'm about to book the videographer and pay the deposit.  I really want to have video so we can look at it 1, 5, and 10 years from now.  I'm torn.  I want it but it's an extra expense.  It's only $600 which is a great price for our area.  I talked to FI about it and he's on board.  Are you ladies have a videographer?  Why or why not?

Re: Videographer?

  • I know it sounds strange but Im gonna use my phone (it has a camcorder) and "film" different parts of my day like getting ready, my bridesmaids or whatever.

Im also gonna show my sister how to use it so when we are saying our vows she can "tape it" for us.  i can then email it to myself and send on facebook.  or save on my computer :)

I thought of hiring someone but this is free for me.....Kiss
  • Nope.  I can't rationalize spending $500+ on video coverage when I know for a fact that at least 2 people in my family own camcorders.  I'm going to have my mom bring hers and have an uncle or cousin or someone video the ceremony and whatever they want to of the reception for us.  Free, and I still have the memories captured.

  • We did a vidoegrapher only because I got a hella deal.  I was debating between a vid and a photo booth.  Then literally the next day a woman called me, she got my name from a bridal show.  She said she had a last minute cancellation on my date and would give me $200 off.  Her packages start at $200, so basically I have the bare minimum for free.  I will add a couple more hours and I think it will still only cost me $200.  So excited!

If you have someone in your fam who could tape it, I would.  But I'm glad I'm going to get the pro thing done.  It's kind of like photogs, you don't want to have to pay for them, but they really are worth it to be able to see your big day anytime you want.

ok, I'm paying an outrageous amount for video and photo.  Well outrageous for me anyway, it's almost a 1/4 of our budget.

Here's how I see it...we  (us and our friends) video a ton of our lives as it is.  We have tons of videos online all over the place and we LOVE looking at them.   They even got my surprise proposal on video.   I can't tell you how much joy I get from watching videos of all of us.  It evokes feelings you can't get from just looking at a photo.

No matter how many photos and keep sakes I get from the wedding day, nothing will remind me of JUST how good it was than a video.

I am willing to pay the extra foor a good videographer because if I'm going to do it, I want it to be done well.  I want to be able to show my kids and i want to be able to hear him say "I  do" over and over again from a good wireless mic when I'm 80 and my hearing is failing.

I'd have to say having a videographer is one of the most important elements of the wedding for me.

    -------------------------------------
I'd just like to add.  A couple girls on here saw my proposal video and I've gotten so many wonderful comments from it.  It's way better than just having a story and a photo.

  • This was how we came to the decision: How many times do you hear, "Want to come over and watch my wedding video?" We decided it wasn't necessary and decided to splurge on our photog, those are the lasting memories. We have friends who have camcorders and such, so I'm sure they'll catch some fun moments, but I wouldn't spend on video.

  • We decided that we might watch the video ONCE, so we went w/o.
  • I'm a huge fan of video like Alicia and as an editor, I wanted to have my day covered.  I knew it was something I would regret if I didnt get it.  We got an amazing deal $650 for ceremony and reception and all the raw footage, so I can go and make videos with it down the road for anniversaries for FI, etc.  I want to be able to show my kids my wedding day someday.  I've watched my parents wedding over and over again!  I did the same with my aunts!  Videos I have from college, etc. I watch a lot because we all laught at them and have a good time.  To me, it was worth the money.  If you think you will regret and can't live without it, then go for it!

  • It really depends on you and your FI, and whether you think you'd watch it.

Everyone I know who has gotten married says that they never watch their video (or wouldn't so they didn't get one).  I feel that for us, looking back on the pictures will be enough, and the video isn't necessary.  Even if it were free, I really don't think I'd get  a video, because I don't think we'd ever watch it!

  • I got a great deal on videography for $650.  I'm very nostalgic, and I know I will enjoy having it around.
  • This was a tough decision for me too. FI and I went to his sisters wedding back in November and thought the videographer was super annoying with his big spotlight, but we knew we were getting married inside at night so we would probably end up having the same issue. Then I spoke with my friend who got married in January and she told me how much she regretted not getting a videographer at least for the ceremony because they wrote their own vows and it was really unique and special. She tried to have a family member tape it but the audio was so quiet you couldn't hear anything. So, I decided to get a videographer for the ceremony only (we will have small mics on) and then have family member tape important parts of the reception (first dance, etc).
  • Yeah we're skipping it.   I'm just going to have a friend videotape the ceremony and the wedding intros are the reception.  We know we will watch the video once and forget about it with the rest of the videos we have shot.
  • im using one only because my cousin's friend wants to get into the wedding biz and will do it for $50!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yay! (hes already a professional videog so i trust him) but even before he offered i did really want one! but all of the prices here for the good ppl are like 1000+ - but if you want it, do it! Im super excited to have one!
  • We simply cant afford one, end of story lol. As much as I would like one, FI parents have a small camcorder and they will tape the ceremony at least

    This.

I found one of the less expensive videographers in Houston, and it's still a hard number to swallow (here's a hint: he's the most expensive vendor we booked, and he's more than our reception venue and church combined...ouch), but when it's all said and done, I know I'll be glad I did it.

  • We are not.  We splured on a high end photographer and figure we can make a slide show of the photos with music and look at that down the road.

If you have the money- go for it- but think of how many pairs of shoes or new purses it could buy! lol

  • We are using one since it was a great package deal with the photographer we booked as well!

We were torn on this as well. I went 7 months of our engagement saying no way I'm not spending money on that...I hate to hear myself talk. Then I went to a wedding and about 5 different couples said you have to get one..."We love ours and our kids love to watch it too", "We wish we got one" and so on. So I looked into it and being in the Boston area found that they were ridicously priced....then I found this awesome couple who were from out of state and still charging out of state rates plus they threw in not only a video montage of us for the cocktail hour but will also do one with our honeymoon pictures. So I couldn't resist.

However if we hadn't found this couple I would not have gotten one because I am spending enough on the photographer!!

  • I'm really torn about this one.  I hate hearing myself talk too.  But I know the day will go by too fast, and I'll want to be able to relive it.  I was thinking about going on Craigslist and looking for someone to do it cheaply next month.
