Hair/Makeup Trial PIP (long)

I just got back from my hair and makeup trial, and I think it went pretty well (even though I'm sick as a dog).  I have tons of pictures because it's hard taking self-shots, and I wanted to get a lot of different angles. I was way too caught up in things, I forgot to bring my veil to the appointment, and I forgot to ask them to take pictures for me.  Forgive the poorly-taken pictures, awkward poses, and my messy bathroom!

Here is the makeup (you can see more angles in the other pictures, too):

Natural light, freshly done:

Artificial (and really shiity) light, after two hours of running errands, eating lunch, and sweating like a pig:

Here is the hair:

Initially I thought I wanted the veil under my hair, but the hairdresser said she really prefers the veil to be on top.  I tried it both ways, and now I'm not so sure. I will say, underneath didn't feel as secure, but I imagine she'd pin it or something.I will probably use a hair flower or comb in place of the veil after the ceremony.

Veil on top:

Veil underneath:

I have to say, getting it done was sort of emotional.  Like trying on the dress, it brought this wave of, "This is really happening!!!" and I also was finally able to really picture how I'll look that day.

I really like the hair, even though I had initially thought that I wanted something simpler.  The makeup is taking some time to get usd to - I loved it in the salon but looking at pictures I feel like it's just not me.  I also hate the way I look in pictures, though, and I know that's part of it (goofy smiles, weird expressions...ugh).

I NEVER wear makeup, and I'm worried FI is not going to like it since we both really prefer a natural look.  I may ask her to tone down the blush and go with a more natural lip color on the day of, I don't know.

So any thoughts or suggestions?  Both the hairdresser and MUA stressed that I can change it as much as I want and encouraged me to get feedback. How do you prefer the veil?  Do you think the makeup is too much? TIA!

  • Yeah I'm really undecided on the veil.  Every inspiration pic I ever picked out was always with the veil under.  I may have to make a last-second decision that day!

  • Makeup is beautiful!  I like the veil underneath too.

  • it looks beautiful! :) loves it!
  • Thanks girls, I'm feeling much better about the makeup.  I have to say, it doesnt FEEL like a lot of makeup, which is a definite plus.  Two votes for veil under, I'm keeping track! (the veil-under pics kinda suck, because I was worried it would fall out, but I do think it looks nice)

  • I don't wear makeup very much either and when I do, is basically a bit of cover up for my extra rosey cheeks, tan eye shadow, and a bit of black eyeliner. I planned on telling my makeup person to keep it very natural so I don't look weird or unlike me.

Having said that! I like your make up. I think it looks pretty.

I love your hair! I'm torn on the veil though. I personally like the up because I like the veil to be seen and under doesn't show it as much. That being said, I do think your hair looks very pretty with the veil underneath and leaves more of your hair to be seen.

I think I'm going to vote under.

  • Beautiful Laura!!  You are so pretty!!  The makeup is not over-done at all and I think it looks great.   My hairdress says the same thing about veil on top of the bun instead of below but I had my heart set on underneath as well.

You are up to three votes for underneath  :)

  • You look beautiful and your makeup looks very natural.  I wouldn't change anything about it.  I vote for veil under too!!

  • I think the makeup looks awesome!  I don't think it looks overdone at all.  Most of the pics will be taken in natural light like the first one, so that's how it'll appear most often.

I vote under.  That's my preference as well (though I'm not sure it's going to work with my hairstyle).

  • I guess I'm the first official veil-on-top vote. My reasoning is that everyone will see your [totally awesome, beautiful] hair for hours at the reception anyway, and it's just a personal/traditional preference of mine. I dig the under look and almost considered doing mine that way, but I just like the effect of it being on top better.

Also, your makeup looks great and not too dramatic at all. You'll be glad for the extra oompf in pictures, when you don't look completely washed out. *nod*

  • Rien - that's what I was thinking.  I was staunchly veil-under, but I like the on-top look and for the majority of the time I won't be wearing the veil anyway, so I'm not worried about it covering my hair.  But I'm not so sure yet!

  • Love the hair-do! Very nice. But I'm torn on the veil, it looks good up and down but would you be wearing it the entire night? I thought some veils can be removed from the comb?

  • MrsJ - I'm taking the whole veil (including comb) out, and then I'm putting in either a hair flower or some kind of decorative comb in its place.

  • Aw I think you look so pretty!!! I love the makeup--dont think it looks too unnatural at all! I know how you feel though because I don't ever wear any make up other than some mascara, and maybe a little eye liner, and when I did my MU trial I felt like my face was painted..just cause I'm not used to powder, cover up, etc.

Love it though, and love the hair! You look great!

I would go with the veil under!

FI will think you are absolutely beautiful, even if your hair is green on the big day! :) Don't even worry about him, his jaw is going to drop!!

This made me tear up a little.  I'm such a pre-wedding mess, it's not even funny. :)  Again, thanks everyone for your compliments - I'm not one for being the center of attention and getting all dolled up, so it makes me all gushy inside to read all these nice things.

  • You look amazing.  The makeup is simple, not over the top.  Hair is so pretty too.  I too like the veil underneath.

  • Love the makeup! It isn't too much at all! and I like the veil underneath, she will pin it in because I had to take out FSIL's at her wedding and it had like a bazillion pins in it.

I figured - I have so many in right now, it's going to take forever to get them all out later!  Once in high school I was so exhausted after prom that I went to sleep with my hair still up, and it took hours getting the pins out the next day because my hair had gotten so tangled up in them.  Not making that mistake ever again!

  • You look beautiful! Definitely veil under.
  • I was set on wearing my veil under also, but I am wearing it on top and my vote for you will be to wear it on top also. You are only wearing it for the ceremony, which is a very minimal amount of time I'm assuming. Let everyone see how beautiful it is and then you are putting in a pretty flower for the reception anyway which will show off your hair. Also, the make-up looks great!

  • Love the makeup, you look gorgeous!  Agree w/ PP, it's not too much at all.  It just seems like it since you're not used to it.

Adore the hairstyle.  Looking at something similar for BMs.  I vote veil under, but I think it may be personal preference.  Veil on top screams traditional to me and I am anything but. I love how modern the under look is these days.  Either way, I'm not wearing a veil, so who knows how much water my opinion holds. :)

  • brew - I was positive I wasn't going to wear a veil either, until they put one on me the day I bought my dress.  I'm a cheeseball.
