Sand Ceremony instead of unity candle?

Hi - Quick intro since I am new to this board.Name:  Jessie (26)FI name:  Christopher (26)Location:  Queens, NYWedding Date:  May 7, 2011Ceremony:  St. Benedict's Church in Bronx, NYReception:  The Riviera in Massapequa, NYI have a question regarding doing the sand ceremony in church as opposed to doing the unity candle.  I love the idea of the sand ceremony because it's something that visually represents the joining of two families and you can keep as a memento on your mantle in your home.Does anyone know if the Catholic Church would be opposed to doing this instead of the Unity Candle ceremony?  Has anyone actually done this?TIA!

depends on the parish, since the unity candle isnt even a catholic ritual to begin with.  if they allow the unity candle, tehn i cant see why tehy wouldnt allow teh sand in its place.

Neither is actually Catholic tradition. Both were banned by my parish but my older sisters parish in TX allowed a unity candle . The best thing to do is ask your priest what is or is not banned

well I know from my brother's wedding and friend's wedding that the Unity Candle is allowed.  I'm definitely going to ask if the sand ceremony is acceptable

love the dress in your siggy.. is that your dress?  the unity candle nor sand ceremony were encouraged at my church since neither have anything to do with the sacrement or mass.  it's up to your individual church what "outside" stuff they allow, just like music, cover shoulders, aisle runners, etc.

Yes, neither the unity candle nor the sand ceremony are Catholic traditions and it depends on your church what they will allow.  My parish will allow the unity candle, but has strictly taken a stand against sand ceremonies.
