Another Ave Maria Question!!

Sorry if this sounds stupid - but would it be weird to have a male singer sing Ave Maria?  I've only heard it sung by women (but this may because i went to all girls schools.)  We're looking for singers and one of my former co-workers husbands happens to be an opera singer.   TIA!

A male singer at my church performs it frequently, so I don't see a problem.

Not at all! But for a male voice, I'd pick the Schubert Ave Maria over the Bach-Gounod though (unless you're thinking of another arrangement). The Schubert is a little more epic, the Bach-Gounod is a little more delicate. Is he a tenor? Might be a bit high for a bass.

It is all a personal preference.  We had a male sing Ave Maria at our wedding.  It was not my first choice, but I got married at a city cathedral and they were very particular about the musicians and singers they allow to perform.  The one woman authorized to sing was on vacation our wedding weekend. I really prefer a female singing this.  It's no big deal, but if I had to do it all over again, I'd try to look for other options.

I absolutely love male voices, and that is why I made sure we asked our friend to sing for the ceremony :)  He has a Josh Groban-que type voice so more of a tenor.  I tried to find Josh Groban's version on you tube and can't find it. Oh and I much prefer the Shubert version myself.  (like the link listed above)

I don't think it would be weird at all. Go ahead and ask him. There are a couple different "versions" of this sing. I have heard two different ones and singer for both were male. They did an amazing job.
