Church Music Only... Part 2

Ok, I guess I already knew what the answer was, I was just hoping there would be the slimmest chance.  So, now that I'm over "At Last", I have NO clue what music to even start looking at.  I haven't been to a catholic wedding in years and we attend the campus parish with sermons geared toward the college students.   The music is also refelctive of the congregation & is more upbeat & played on acoustic guitars, so I'm at a loss for tradtional music.

Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated, ladies.

Have you met with your musicians/organist? Did they have any suggestions? Do you like the contemporary-style music at the mass, or are you looking for something more traditional?

We actually got a worksheet with all kinds of suggestions on them as part of our packet. I'm sure there are some websites with information and mp3 links, although they weren't much to my taste. catholicweddinghelp.com is one of them.

Are there any particular hymns you like?

We have to meet with the music director of the church where we're getting married and he said that we could bring suggestions for him to look over or that he could recommend things for us and go from there.

I would ask a priest or a wdding coordinator even at your campus parish. They would know what songs are more common for weddings. Or if you google or youtube catholic wedding music normally you can find some soundbites and stuff.

There is no musical director just a few rotating musicians (pianist, organist ... and an accordian...)   I really love "How Great Thou Art", but it's the song played at my Grandma's funeral, so I don't think I can (emotionally) do that song.   I will check with our local parish for music options.  Does anyone have a favorite song  to suggest?

I can't help you; my favorite English hymn is the Welsh "Guide me oh, thou great Jehovah" but the second line is "pilgrim through this barren land," which I don't think would go over well.

Back when I was in a (mostly Gregorian Chant) choir in undergrad, we sang at one wedding where the bride (not Catholic) wanted a psalm that her Protestant family would know... so she picked Psalm 23, with the "Shepherd me oh God, beyond my wants, beyond my needs, from death into life" refrain for her responsorial psalm. Please don't do that. ;)

Do you like the contemporary style music, or do you prefer more traditional sounding music?

We used several traditional hymns at our Nuptial Mass.  None were exactly about marriage, but all were about love and God's love for us.  My favorites were "O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus" and "Love Divine, All Loves Excelling."

Here's a few selections from my church's list. If you want more, give me your email and I'll try to scan it and send it to you. There's a ton of suggestions.

Mother's processional:  Ave maria (schubert), Ave maria (gounod)

Wedding Party Processional /Recessional - you need one for the bp entrance, one for your entrance and one for your exit
    Bridal chorus - wagner
    wedding march recessional -mendelssohn
jesu joy of man's desiring - bach
    trumpet voluntary - clarke
sheep may safely graze - bach
wedding processional - sound of music - rodgers

Responsorial psalm - Blest are those, god is love, center of my life, here i am, love one another

Unity candle- we have been told, when love is found, wherever you go

presentation of gifts - Panis Angelicus, Prayer of St. francis, Ave Verum Corpus

Communion - amazing grace, how great thou art, one bread, one body, i have loved you

At my church, prelude music can be secular. They are letting me do Unchained Melody and In My life. I bet you could do At Last as a prelude. The list they gave me has a ton of secular love songs for the prelude.

Try listening to Set Me as a Seal by Matt Maher--you might like it and I think a lot of churches would allow it. I think its beautiful

Our church too has a musical director with an approved list for our church.
