where/how you do your pre-cana is up to the priest who is marrying you.  sometimes he must follow whatever the diocese decides, other times he can act independent.  IMO, its better when tehy can act independent as different couples may have different pre-cana needs.  i dont think pre-cana can be one size fits all.

I think the answer to that varies by diocese.  Here we only have the option of an 1 day (9 am - 3 pm) class.  But I have heard of other diocese that offer engaged encounter weekends and one on one options with already married couples.  This is in addition to our FOCUS test, and any pre-cana sessions with our priest/deacon.

mswood1977 - sounds like what we went through.

Yes, it varies per diocese. We had to do the EE weekend and do pre-cana classes with the priest, and take the FOCCUS test and discuss it with the priest. We have a little bit of unique situation though bc we live out of state and are getting married in our hometown. We had to fulfill both diocese/parish requirements even though we did our marriage prep stuff where we currently live.

I'm from Houston and yes, in this diocese you have the option of choosing either the Engaged Encounter Weekend or the married couples meetings.  Depending on the parish her in Houston, you may or may not need to the NFP classes.  I'm almost certain you have to do Pre-Cana no matter where you are and it includes the FOCCUS test.  I'm getting married in Dallas and it's required there, so it was pretty difficult to find a regular class offered here in Houston.

We will get married in a different place as well, but the Deacon with whom we did our marriage prep told us we only needed to fulfill the requirements of the parish where you will get married.  The other parish where we live helped us fulfill the requirements, but did not add to the list of the things we needed to do even though it was different.

Good Luck to you!  Let me know if you have any other questions.

We could have chosen an Engaged Encounter retreat, or several evening classes, or a one-weekend set of lectures. We chose to do the weekend lectures and had a great experience!

It depends on the diocese and the Priest. We were similar to Riss and could chose between several different types of classes or Engaged Encounter.
