1st Dance Song Dilemma

With this I have been flip-flopping for quite some time.  The hubs wanted Depeche Mode's "Somebody"...too dark.  I wanted Phil Collins "Groovy Kind of Love" (b/c we r totally dorky like that), we both like Beach House's "Take Care" but nobody can understand the lyrics and the song that holds the most meaning for us isn't technically romantic but its Beatles "Blackbird".  I want something different, but something that has meaning to us.  Comments?

I say "Blackbird" all the way.

FI and I were struggling to pick a 1st dance song because we were thinking too much about what the guests would think. The 1st dance shouldn't bee what the audience wants, but what the 2 of you feel.

If you think Blackbird would be strange, we want to do Pink Floy'd "Time" LOL. Everyone at the wedding will be completely Undecided, but we don't care. That song has significant meaning to the both of us Smile

Its funny b/c "Blackbird" is my fave Beatles song, but not very well-known (i think).  While he was stationed at Bagram AFB in Afghanistan he was coming back from the mess hall at like 1am and he walked past a bus stop where there were some army guys waiting for the next shuttle.  It had just started snowing he told me and then these army guys just started singing "Blackbird"  totally acapella and absolutely out of nowhere.  He says he knew then and there that I was always with him and that I was the ONE.  That story still makes me tear up.

We had a lot of trouble deciding on our first song. We finally narrowed it down to a few and danced to them in our living room. When we got to "Just the Way You Are" by Billy Joel we both knew that was it! Maybe try that? Another knottie suggested dancing to them and it really helped us to decide.

I don't know if this will help or not, but there's a nice version of Blackbird on the I am Sam soundtrack.  I don't remember who sings it, but definitely check it out.

Yeah, I can't fathom not having that as my first dance song with that kind of history <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-smile.gif" border="0" alt="Smile" title="Smile" />

And Blacbird is actually one of their most notable songs; so I'd bet 9 out of 10 of your guests are very familiar with it (unless they're all under 20 years old, lol).

    Also, there is a GORGEOUS version by Sarah McLachlan<a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3VrggQW7tk"> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3VrggQW7tk</a>

Also, a cover from Across the Universe: <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zai0R-Tvd4">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zai0R-Tvd4</a>

Then of course there's one of my favorite Beatles songs, "Two Of Us," which is just so sweet when you know the root of the song:

I only mention it because your story reminded me of it. It was when Paul and Linda were long distance and writing one another.

Go with what is significant to you.  That will make it more meorable and enjoyable for the two of you.  Plus, if you are dancing to something that you are indifferent about it will show in the photos.
