<div>How bad is it? FI will be in the same boat in the fall so I want to mentally prepare myself for it.  Ceglare, if I remember right, your FI is in his first year teaching so you might be able to answer it too.</div>
  • There are tons of forums online that your FI can look into.

My FI is into hunting & fishing forums and he'd be on it 24/7 if he could. Right now he's sitting in the TV room all alone and eating pizza, watching espn. Probably a happy boy right now.

  • Last year was my first year teaching and I remember how overwhelming it was. The year is pretty much 1/2 way through, right?? What does your FI teach?

What I did when I first started was to promise myself to NOT bring home work if it doesn't need to be done immediately. It really depends on what a person is teaching, obviously. And I also tried to work ahead- made few lesson plans ahead of time so I can have more time to focus on other things and/or relax. I save all of my lesson plans and now I'm into my 2nd year, I like being able to look back and use them again or make some changes before using them.

My FI does a similar thing with the lesson plans. He got an external hard drive for extra backup for them. My mom was a teacher for 10 years and strongly suggested this. FI isn't too stressed out, but a girlfriend of mine is in an inner city school in her first year and hates it because it's so stressful. I think a lot of it depends on the type of school you're in. My FI is in a very good school district so the kids aren't as much of a headache. He also tries very hard to leave his troubles at school. He does need to vent sometimes but he doesn't like bringing the negative parts of his job home with him, which is good for us.

Oh that's for sure. My cousin works at a school similar to ALC and he feels like he's being beat up mentally daily. One time he was rushed to the hospital because a student put something in his coffee and drugged my cousin. OMG.

I like the idea of leaving negativity at work- but sometimes it's good to vent. Often I have to remind myself to not take things so personally if it's something I can't control.

My mom's been special ed for almost 15 years now.  She just had a student this week threaten to kill her because she gave him a zero for not doing his homework.

That sucks. Does he work with the same teacher all year long? Special Ed is a lot of work and a lot of fun. I'm really happy to know that your FI is in special ed- we don't see a lot of male teachers in special ed.

  • FI will either be teaching Social Studies or English for high school or middle school.  He is pretty good about getting ahead on unit plans and lesson plans, but with me in grad school, I want to be able to be able to support him as much as possible.

So scary. Did the student get suspended? I remember back in elementary school there was a student with EBD and he was pelting a teacher with pencils, scissors, anything sharp he could find.

Mmm.. yes, I see what you mean. Exciting!
  • My mom's passion is special ed. She is retired now, but is teaching college courses.  I know it is definitely rewarding, but can be kind of scary sometimes.  I admire all the people who go into special ed because I know it is something I couldn't do.
