July 2012 Weddings

How do yall stay organized?

Spent the last three hours straightening, and cleaning our apartment.

So - my apartment is not dirty - but it very easily becomes a disorganized mess.

How do yall stay organized? Do you put important papers in files? Binders? How to you keep track of incoming mail - particularly bills that will need to be paid in upcoming weeks? Where do magazines go?

And how do you stay organized in your daily life? How do you keep track of things that need to be done? Planner? Cell Phone?

FI has a bad habit of not opening  a decent portion his mail. I literally have a photobox full of all his unopened mail since February. Drives me nuts. :p

Errant papers were FI's biggest problem before I moved in.  Now I tackle the main as soon as it comes in and he let's me open his mail (or else he'll leave it unopened for days!).  Recycle the junk, upcoming bills go in a folder that's kept in the kitchen (the computers are in the kitchen).  I then mark the due date on the paper calendar on the fridge.  Most of them are automatic withdrawal, so really there's only ONE bill that needs to be paid manually and I just use BillPay through my bank (no stamps or envelopes).

Magazines - I have those cardboard upright magazine holders that go on a shelf.

Bills and other paperwork that we need to keep but are done with, these go into a filing cube that I keep in the spare bedroom closet.  Sometimes the piles sit on the spare bed until I actually file them, but they are at least out of sight.

Google Calendar!  I don't even use Gmail for email, just for the calendar purposes.  You can create various calendars in different colors and turn them on and off.  I have Work, Personal, Graduate school, Wedding all on this Google Calendar in different colors.  It's very helpful.

All my paid bills go into a binder. One for every 2 years.  All the unpaid bills 9although i'd liek to keep them in the trash can) are placed beside my computer as soon as I get them so it's a constant reminder to pay them.

All my magazines are placed in wicker baskets  or leather magazine totes that have been placed around my living room as part of the 'decorarion" or in a HUGE wood basket that i use as part of a focus point on our coffee table.

As far as how do I stay organized in my daily life? Everything is placed in the melon thats on my shoulders called my head.  I have a really good memory and seem to remember pretty musch everything.  But just in case, for really important appointmenst I'll write it on a pad we have on our fridge that we can write and erase things that have come and past.  Kinda like a chalk board but not.

As far as FI and his unopnened mail.  This doesn't happen much.  Half his mail I open, because they're bills and I pay them.  Otherwise I leave them on the counter for him to see when he gets home.  He usually opens it then.

We have a small filing cabinet for all important stuff that needs saving.  Bills that need paying go in a little tray on the computer desk until they get paid...then they get filed.  Magazines kind of stack up right now...I'm so behind reading them.

I have a planner, but anything important usually goes into my phone with a reminder set.

Mine does this, too.  So I open it and sort through it.  He doesn't have an issue with it, but if at anytime he starts having an issue, he can then look through it himself everyday.

Where do magazines go?  We just put the mail on top of each other's keyboards.  We open them right away normally.  We throw away what is trash and either throw the things that need to be shredded in a box.  As far as bills go, we don't have that many and FI is really good about paying things on time.  So, it really isn't an issue.  We don't buy magazines.  If we did they'd just sit on our desk and clutter annoys me...

we have a dry erase board that is a calendar in our kitchen.  That is where we write our schedules on it and any other important info that we need to know about.  Plus, I have a mental note, which most of the time I remember, especially if it is important.

    That is genius.

  • FI and I share a google calendar, which works brilliantly. For the wedding, I have a separate gmail account, with all my info in google docs and all the mail in the inbox. It works perfect.

  • I think going paperless is the easiest way to stay organized whenever possible. We have our bills on auto-pay and I save the statements in separate email folders as well as on my computer so we can check something if needed. For the wedding, I have a few checklists and spreadsheets but the closer we get, the easier it is for me because the to-do list gets smaller. Also, as soon as I got a contract from a vendor, I put the due dates for the payments in my phone so there wouldn't be any surprises.

I find it much easier to pay bills online and have opted out of recieving paper bills. I'ts so much easier because it's" GREEN" and less trash to throw away.If its something like insurance info we file it in our file cabinet with has sections with labels so we don't mix up our separate forms. As for magazine's I now read them and then give them away or donate to our hospital, I am a recovering magazineaholic hahahaha and use to keep like every issue but it was so much clutter just keeping them

I make sure any dates, passwords, or notes I put them straight into my cell phone and set reminder's. Its much easier for me because I never leave home w/o it and can email notes to FI or anywhere I need to. Thank God for my Iphone lol

  • I'm the most disorganized person on the planet! Lol I pay bills online or automatic withdraw. I use the calendar on my cellphone for appointments. Last, my fi keeps the house organized. I lose my phone everyday. Tonight, I thought I left it in my jeans and accidentally washed it in the washing machine.

  • The only place I'm organized is at my job. I really have no business giving you any organization advice. I do agree with the PPs that mentioned going paperless and using gmail to organize. I am trying to keep a record of EVERYTHING important in my gmail. I guess that is kind of scary to think that google now knows everything about me, but they probably could find it out if they cared anyway, lol.

  • Haha I love this thread.

We keep all of our papers in our desk drawers, separated by folders.

We are enrolled in automatic payments and mostly get electronic mail, this is sooooo much easier! We usually pay off all of our bills as soon as they come in the mail and then put the papers in the file.

I put all of the magazines in the bathroom in a bassinet- but when it becomes full, I give them away or use it for a bonfire!

And how do you stay organized in your daily life? How do you keep track of things that need to be done? Planner? Cell Phone?

I used to rely on my blackberry to keep notes of my upcoming appointments, but now I have a new phone- it doesn't really have a great app to use so I write down things on a little post it note or just get things over with right away!!
