Hawaii, which island!?

Hi all, I'm planning my honeymoon in Hawaii but don't have a clue which island to go to. I'm living in Ireland but use this site alot for inspiration so needless to say I don't know anyone who has been to Hawaii. As its our honeymoon we obviously want to pick somwhere that is romantic and isn't overrun with families and college kids. Bascially we are looking for gorgeous beaches with a mix of water based and land activities, my hubby-to-be is a real water baby so snorkelling is a must. We want to have the option of either lying on the beach all day or exploring the islands, possibly going on tours or renting a car ourselves. Also needs to have good restaurants and bars where we can have a few drinks and dance into the night, we won't necessarily be partying every night but want to have the choice rather than be stuck on an island with only one bar! From reading the posts I think Maui could be the best island for us, however what are people's opinions on the Big Island, is it more city based?

Re: Hawaii, which island!?

  • Yes, Maui is probably the best overall island when it comes to what you want.  But if you're traveling all the way from Ireland, you may wish to consider visting a couple of islands.  Kauai is gorgeous and very laid back.  Parts of the Big Island look like the surface of the moon.
  • We decided to go to Maui for 6 nights and then The Big Island for 4 nights b/c we wanted to experience both of those islands.  We have already book a helicopter tour on the big island to go over the active volcano.  We hope to have a few days of nothing but relaxing and then also do some exploring the others.

  • I just got back from the Big Island and really enjoyed it. I agree with the previous post about visiting a couple of the islands... Maui and the Big Island could be fun!

If you do go to the Big Island I really recommend going to Hapuna Beach and going to dinner at Kamuela Provision Company - Make a reservation for 2 @ 5:30pm!

  • If you don't want to deal with families and college kids don't go to Oahu.  I would suggest going to Kauai and Maui for your honeymoon.  I'm not a big fan of the Big Island.  The volcano national park is pretty cool, but you could only really see stuff if you have the right gear.  Most of the beaches are lined with dried up lava too so you cut up your legs when swimming.
  • Maui for sure! I have been there a couple of times with my family and have to agree it has everything you could want if you are into the snorkeling, just relaxing, etc etc. FI and I are leaning towards Hawaii for our Honeymoon.

  • I'm in this boat too, I've heard awesome things about Maui so sounds like you coulnd't go wrong there. We may do some island jumping because we really would love to go see the Pearl Harbor site in Oahu.
  • Thanks for all the replies ladies,  I think we're going to split our time between Maui & Kauai!
  • I would defiantly advise you to go to Kauai that way you will most likely not be overrun with college kids and families. You need to stay close to Hanalei Bay its very romantic!

So since it's so romantic, I suppose your FI is taking his GF there...will you be going along to carry their bags?

image Love people. Use things. Never confuse the two.
  • There's no poor choice really. It depends on what time of year you go at to run into tons of families. If you get out of Waikiki, you can get tons of rest and relaxation and outdoorsy stuff in any of the islands. You'll definitely need a car while you're there for exploration purposes!
