Big Island Hawaii

I have no idea which part of the island to stay on.  Where would you stay and why? Any specific hotel recs?  Activities?  thanks!

Re: Big Island Hawaii

  • I am staying at the Mauna Lani Bay -- it gets great reviews on tripadvisor.com & in travel books.

    For activities...

    Mauna Kea Summit Adventures (www.maunakea.com/">www.maunakea.com)

    Volcano

    Waterfalls

    Black sand beach

  • We are moving around.  I am not crazy about one hotel, but the other is a little bed and breakfast in Volcano.  It has private cottages that are all wood and glass.  It is what I am MOST excited for on our HM.

Feel free to check it out!

I'm marrying a guy from the Big Island, and my parents have also moved to the Big Island. My fiance and I don't live there but go back once a month and plan to move there in the future.

You definitely want to avoid Kona town (for accommodations). Any of the resorts to the north will do, but I would avoid the Hilton Waikoloa, which definitely has more of a family feel to it. Not so romantic. I haven't stayed anywhere else, but have seen the different resorts. Of course, the Four Seasons at Hualalai and the almost attached Kona Village are the best. Fairmont Orchid is also amazing. Be careful when choosing because on the BI there are so few sandy beaches that the resorts have scooped up the easily accessible ones. Meaning they get VERY crowded. Hapuna Beach is one of the most crowded.

If you want to do bed and breakfasts, there are so many options. My favorite is the Holualoa Inn (http://www.holualoainn.com/). Holualoa is the cutest, tiniest town ever right in the center of quaint galleries and Kona coffee farms. Waimea also has great options.

I don't know much about Hilo, so can't help you there. I guess it depends on what you want to be doing while on the Big Island.

Activities are limitless. Snorkeling is the best there. Hope this helps you some!
  • We are staying in Wikiki for 2 nights @ The Moana Surfrider; 5 nights in Kauai at The Hyatt and finishing off with 6 nights at The Four Season's Hualali and I couldn't be happier with our choices! The Four Seasons in Kona is one of the top hotels!!!! It's a bit pricey but it's your HM and you should be pampered :)
    Good luck!
  • Hilton Waikoloa Village!  beautiful hotel
