Weight loss and family

We are traveling to Detroit this weekend to visit family. I am making great progress with my diet and loosing weight. Many of my relatives have not seen me in years and will cook so much food and will be insulted if I only eat small portions.

What do you recommend I do while traveling and visiting family? Also, If I tell them I'm on a diet they will look at me like I'm crazy.

Re: Weight loss and family

  • I know how you feel. My family are big eaters. We all love food. We have the best of times at gatherings with lots of food. So I understand how hard it is to try and eat healthier when people around you don't. I don't know if I can give you any good advice because I'm still working on my motivation and diet too. But I wouldn't tell anyone I'm on a diet. I would just drink water before I ate and use good portion control. And afterwards when you get back home maybe go on an extra long walk or jog to work off the extra calories .
  • I cannot give too much advice on this.  But if I were in your position, I would definitely continue to eat smaller portions!  I wouldn't want to lose my motivation just to please family members by eating a lot of food!  I would just tell them you might go back for seconds!  You can do this!  =)  You don't have to give in!  I know its difficult especially around family because they love you for who you are!
  • Ditto, can't help much from personal experience lol, but I agree drinking a full glass of water before eating is a good plan. And I totally agree with fancie, NEVER tell people (especially) family that you're on a diet!! They'll always tell you not to worry, you look great, you don't need a diet and that "a little more won't hurt". Though they love us dearly, sometimes family isn't the greatest of help when it comes to dieting haha! So do small portions, pretend you'll go back for seconds if you have to and tell them you're just full! They don't need any other explanations than that. Good luck Carla! I know it's tough but you can do it!! :)
  • I agree with all these ladies, keep with your portion control if someone approaches you just tell them that you are trying a little of everything. :)
