Mama's Fish House - Maui - Do you need reservation?

Do you need reservations?  I'm trying to figure out whether we need to make restaurant reservations before we leave for the honeymoon.  Are there any other restaurants that require calling ahead? Thanks!

  • Specifically I don't know about Maui but whenever I travel I always check out opentable.com for reviews and reservations. I just checked and they have a ton of hawaii rest. listed and on the site they will say if reservations are required or recommended. hth!

Yes, def get a reservation ahead of time for Mama's. If you plan on attending a luau, I'd also suggest you book ahead.  In most cases, if you book ahead through the luau's website, it will also save you some money. I love OpenTable.com but most restaurants in Hawaii don't use it, most use the old-fashioned way...you need to call :)
  • Yes, you will need reservations for Mama's.  We had our hotel make them for us at the beginning of our stay.  However, I think you can now make them off of their website (mamasfishhouse dot com).  I'll also second pp about the luau, particularly Old Lahaina Luau - we tried to make them a few weeks in advance of our trip and they were completely booked, so book that early.  Enjoy!
  • I am typically of the midset that you don't need reservations for many of the activities you'll do in Hawaii.  That's the way we usually roll, and its never been a problem on our trips.  But, Mama's is an exception- they are pretty popular and crowded, make this in advance.  We used opentable.com.  In fact, a lot of the restaurants we ate at on Maui are on there (Spago, Nick's Fishmarket, etc.).

  • We made res. at Mama's about 2 wks prior so we could be there for sunset. and for the Luau since it was a certain night we wanted (about 10 days before we were there).
  • We just returned from Maui this morning and made all of our reservations the day of or the day before, with the exception of the luau we went to (Feast at Lele.) I booked the luau about 2.5 months in advance and we had the best table in the house. Even making the reservations the day of/before, we were always able to get a great table by the water for sunset. We didn't go to Mama's (not big seafood eaters,) but I checked opentable a couple of days before we left just to see if we could have it as an option and there were plenty of open times. Have fun- I didn't want to leave! Oh, also...just another restaurant rec - Merriman's in Kapalua. The food and ambience were just incredible. It just opened a year ago so it's not in the Maui Revealed book (if you don't have it, get it!) but we wre referred there by some locals. We also did a fantastic sunset champagne cruise with Scotch Mist II - it was amazing. Only 6 passengers on the boat, as opposed to the 50+ on a lot of the other boats we saw. I know you are getting more than you asked for, but I just got back and I'm excited to share!

  • yes, make a reservation.  Even with a reservation we had to wait.  Worth the wait though!
