My Dream Honeymoon to Ireland??

My fiance and I would really like to go to Ireland on our honeymoon.  It has been a dream of ours to go but our finances are kind of tight.  I've done some research and found a good place to stay but I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to save money on a trip to Ireland or to Europe in general.  Any suggestions would be great!!Thanks!!

  • We went to Ireland a few years back and it was AMAZING!  Fly into Shannon, rent a car, drive around the country and fly out of Dublin - trust me!  We bought a portable nav and were set!  We loved every town we went to and had an amazing time!  Fabulous food, beer and people!
  • There are a ton of B&Bs so that's one good way to save money.
  • I live in London and it is expensive, but there are always ways to save. I went to Dublin for 4 days last year with a friend, we got a great deal through lastminute.com It's a British site, but has great deals. If you want more info on money saving in London page me on the Philadelphia board.
  • It depends on what you want to see, and what kind of travellers you and your DF are.  The first time I visit a country I like to do a tour or at least a few day tours to make sure I see the highlights.  For example, I found a week tour in Ireland that DF and I were thinking of taking (so he can see the highlights, I've been several times) that was I think $2500, but that included all breakfast and dinners, hotel, transport, entrance to all things visited and tips for the tour guides at the different stops.  No worries or hassel but very structured. If you and you DF are the blaze your own trail, find the local cool place to hang out types then the tour route may not be the greatest experience for you. It all depends on your personalities.  If you are the latter type of traveller then I would advise trip advisor as a good spot to get reviews and recs for where to stay etc.
  • To add to the pp who suggested renting a car - it is very expensive to rent a car. When we went in 2007, we had to put a deposit down (which was returned) and pay daily insurance that was equal to the cost of the rental. it may have changed since then, I don't know. I just remember it being very expensive.

  • We went to Ireland two years ago using a package offered by Sceptre Tours. It included our flight, a rental car, and B&B vouchers. We had a great time. Also, if you are going when the weather is warm take a tour of Skellig Michael. It was definately the highlight of our trip. http://www.sceptretours.com/vacations/ireland-independent-emerald-package
