Sonoma

Hi everyone!Fi's parents are giving us their timeshare for a week and we are thinking of going to Sonoma for our honeymoon. Can anyone tell me about great things to do in area? What are some fun day trips to take? We are thinking of heading to national park on the coast for a day, good idea, bad idea? Also, we could stay in Napa, but have heard that Sonoma is more laid back. Opinions?TIA!

Re: Sonoma

  • I was just about to come on here and ask the same thing! We want to go to the Gallapagos Islands, but that's looking too expensive, so now we're thinking Sonoma and/or Napa! =)One of the day trips I want to make is to Pointe Reyes and to the Hot Springs. (maybe two trips?)

  • We did this for our mini-moon, and the timeshare was in an adorable little town about a half hour from Sonoma/Napa (still very much in wine country), called Windsor. We did the wine train, where you are served lunch as you travel past vineyards, and then take a tour of a winery (tasting included!). You hop back on the train and have dessert on the way back. It was so worth it, and there are different tours/packages you can look into. After that, we just kind of cherry-picked which wineries to go to. You can only have so much wine (or champagne!) and still be alright to drive, if you're renting a car, which I recommend. There are some amazing restaurants in Napa and Sonoma, as well. We wish we would have done a day (probably 2) in San Fran, but we LOVED the area, so we know we'll go back. We went in mid-November, and it was absolutely gorgeous.
  • Celsius, thanks for your response! This would be our honeymoon, we hope to do a bigger trip to Australia in a few years. We could save up the money for a bigger trip now, but FI gets limited amounts of vacation a year so we can only take a one week honeymoon after the wedding. Also, the timeshare in Windsor is the one that we are looking at...worldmark right? How did you like it there? Thanks for your help!
  • Is it necessary to rent a car? We were hoping to get around by bike and maybe rent a car for just a day or two

  • I personally think it is necessary to rent a car because the wineries are pretty spread out. Also, if you are flying into San Francisco the drive to Napa/Sonoma will be 1.5 to 2 hours. FI and I also hope to do some day trips so we want the car.I would also ask on the local Napa board, they seem to have helpful info.
  • Yup! The Worldmark! It was nice, like having an apartment, although I believe it is also attached to a Hotel (Wyndham?). We even grilled out one night, since there's a great Safeway nearby. The town is SO adorable - very cute and quaint, (think Celebration, FL, if you've ever been there) with some really great restaurants. Yes, I absolutely think you need to rent a car, or you are going to be TI-RED. As PP said, the wineries are all over, spread out and there are SO MANY. You might think about renting one for the day, or something, but you are going to want a car, unless you're training for the Tour de France. But like I said, look into the Wine Train, we did that the first day, and it was a great intro to wine country. I will say though, that once you've done a tour, you've done it. Tastings, however, are different. ;)We loved Cakebreads and Jacuzzi, and also Domain Carneros (sparkling wines - GORGOUS grounds).
