Belize honeymoon - Amazing!

If anyone is looking for an incredible, adventurous, beautiful experience I would recommend going to Belize. DH and I just got back from a 10 day honeymoon there and we can't imagine anything more perfect. First we stayed at Ka'ana, a resort in San Ignacio which is on the mainland. We had 5 days of incredible adventures - exploring Mayan ruins, cave tubing, zip lining and canoeing through ancient caves. All of these were private tours and Ka'ana provided the most amazing service, food and romantic experience I can imagine. After that we spent the next 5 days at Victoria House on Ambergris Caye. It was a perfect beach paradise and a nice way to relax after all the Indiana Jones adventures we had been having. It's a beautiful country and the people are friendly and welcoming. English is the main language and most places take US currency. If you're still looking for a honeymoon spot definitely check it out - especially Ka'ana! :)

  • WOW --sounds wonderful...always wanted to see Belize! Did you think there were a lot of bugs? How were things getting around,I heard because of everything being on a Cay that you had to ferry everywhere.
  • It's a good idea to wear bugspray if you're hiking in the jungle or going out at night. But honestly, I didn't think it was that bad. I think I got 3 bugbites in the whole 10 days I was there. I could get more than that just sitting in my backyard at home! As long as you bring bugspray with deet in it and make sure to wear it at night you're fine.Getting around was no problem at all. Most resorts provide tranportation. Our resort picked us up from the airport, had cars or trucks and a driver for all the excursions on the main land and brought us back to the airport when were were going to Ambergris Caye. Some of the excursions to the Mayan ruins involved some offroading very bumpy dirt roads, but our driver was great and it just added to the adventure! You can get to the Cayes by water ferry (about an hour boat ride) or a 15 minute flight on a small plane. I thought that would be really scary, but not at all - very smooth and beautiful flight. Then in San Pedro (the little town on Ambergris Caye) you could rent a golf cart from the resort and drive all around. Even people who live there ride around on golf carts - it was so fun! :)
  • Its awesome that you had such a great time! we are trying to figure out where to honeymoon and belize is one of our top choices. Do you mind telling me how much you paid? Also did you go through a tour place or did you do everything yourself. Pictures of Belize look amazing!!!!ThanksJessica
  • I saw Victoria House while we were in Belize last year...what a great honeymoon spot! I think that place is pretty pricey, but just absolutely gorgeous.
  • Belize is a place we are thinking of too. I love all your info and would like to know your expense if you dont mind sharing! Thanks!!!

  • I think our total expense was about $7000 not including spending money. But that did include two meals a day plus all the private excursions we took. Ka'ana and Victoria House are rather pricey, but it is a Central American country and quite different from the US - you don't want to stay just anywhere. Definitely do your research and spring for the nice hotel - believe me you will think it's worth it!  I have to say when we first got there and were driving through Belize City (really, a tiny town compared to what we are used to here) and saw shack-like homes, run down buildings, and houses with outdoor plumbing I was a little worried. But when we got to our resorts we had every luxury we could want. Then you really start to appreciate the grittier parts of the country that you see and have a better understanding of the people there. It made me WANT to spend my money in the country and help people make a living. We actually booked the whole thing ourselves. Victoria House has a package on their website called the Sand and Stone package and we did that. That was AFTER talking to a travel agent who told us "Why do you want to go to Belize? There's nothing there. You should take a cruise." Yeah, so much for travel agents! We did it ourselves and got a much better deal all around.
  • Another romantic and charming place to stay near San Ignacio is Table Rock Jungle Lodge.  It's very unique, and there are only three rooms there, so you get incredibly personalized service from the owners, who designed the entire lodge themselves.  They have a great sense of decor, and they've thought of absolutely every detail.  The food is also amazing.  We loved our stay there and I think it would make a perfect honeymoon spot.  We drove to some of the more expensive lodges, like Blancaneaux, while we were there, and Table Rock was hands down the most beautiful place I saw.  I will definitely stay there again when I return.  Belize is a fun destination - there is so much variety and adventure!  Have fun planning your trip.
