DIY or Use a TA?

Who booked their honeymoon themselves and who used a Travel Agent? Advantages/Disadvantages? FI and I are looking at a week in Tuscany and a week in Croatia at the moment. We haven't ruled out the maldives or perhaps a cruise. But Tuscany/Croatia is at the top of the list. Our wedding May of 2010. So thoughts? Are TA's more likely to get you better honeymoon "spiffs" at various hotels/etc to help celebrate - or is it just as easy to tell people you're honeymooning yourself? thoughts?

Re: DIY or Use a TA?

  • My husband and I wanted to honeymoon in Tahiti, but we really knew nothing about our destination so we enlisted the help of a travel agent whose was a Tahiti Specialist (TS). Boy, he really knew his stuff. He travelled there many times and could really speak from experience which we liked. He helped us to choose islands to visit, accomodations and activities. And we were thrilled with all of his recommendations. It was also nice to have someone take care of this because we were so busy with the details of the wedding. I guess my point is if you don't know much about your chosen destination, or if you need a pro to help you narrow down your choices with great suggestions, go with an agent. Hope this helps.
  • FI & I used a TA.We aren't big travelers, all we knew is that we wanted to go to Mexico. The TA was very helpful in comparing resorts and telling us all kinds of details that websites didn't mention. After we booked, I went online and compared rates. The price the TA gave us was way better than anything I found online, but that's not always the case. Some TA's will offer price matching though.I found the TA very helpful, and very worth while.

  • We used a TA. At least meet with one. They are free and know a lot about travel! Ours had a thing where if the price of our honeymoon went down after we booked we got money back. We got 300 dollars! I can't really see a disadvantage, you don't have to do what they suggest.

  • I've always done it myself - that way I get it tailored to exactly what I want.
  • I had never used a travel agent before, but I used one for my honeymoon. We have never traveled internationally before, and I definitely wanted the advice of a profession. TA's are free and they know their stuff. We got a good price and piece of mind that if something goes wrong, we have someone to call. She also made comparisons and recommended travel insurance for us, which should be a must for anyone booking their honeymoon.
