Memorial Table Ideas??

We're planning on having a memorial table at our reception with pictures of family members who were really close to us who have died.  We'd like to put a short poem or note in a frame in the middle of the table.  If FI and I were to write something from the heart it would wind up being an essay.  So any ideas?

I'm still thinking about this myself, but one poem I saw at a recent wedding was "High Flight" by John Gillespie Magee. The bride's father had passed away from brain cancer when she was a child, and they put an exercpt of this poem in the program. It's not specifically a memorial/grieving poem, but Ronald Reagan after the Challenger crash: "slipped the surly bonds of earth" "to touch the face of God."

Another one I have been considering is an excerpt from the lyrics to "Taps" since FI's and I's grandfathers were veterans.

"Day is done, gone the sun

From the lakes, from the hills, from the skies

    All is well, safely rest;

    God is nigh.

    Then goodnight, peaceful night;

Till the light of the dawn shineth bright.

God is near, do not fear,

    Friend, goodnight."

I don't know if that's any help at all, sorry!

  • I'm thinking on our memorial table were gonna have votive candles and pictures of my dad and uncle and our grandparents.. As for the poem, we are doing:

    In Flanders Field by
    Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie

    In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields.

  • Thanks for the ideas ladies!

I have had this one bookmarked for awhile!

    HTH!

                               In Our Hearts

We thought of you with love today,

                    But that is nothing new.

                    We thought about you yesterday

And the days before that too.

We think of you in silence

And we often speak your name.

                    We have our retrospections

And your photograph in a frame.

                    Your memory is our keepsake,

                    With which we’ll never part.

God has you in his arms.

We have you in our hearts.

                    Today, on our wedding day,

We want to honor our family and friends

Who could not be here on earth with us,

But are present in spirit and light.

  • Alright, I have it all done.  Thanks for all the ideas!

I'm going to have "In Loving Memory..." at the top and then greenkitty's quote and then I'm listing each family member's name and their relationship to FI or me.

    Example:
    Frank Rizzo
Grandfather of the Bride / Abuelo de la Novia

  • I love that poem Kim!!! We may use that.  I don't know if we are doing a table but we are doing a rememberence of FIs mom and his best friend for sure.  just not sure how yet
  • Kim, that poem is beautiful. I just may steal that. We were gonna set up a table at the church and have their pictures and flowers there.
  • Haha - Guess I'm going in a totally different direction than the rest of you.

This is what I put together to go in the middle of the framed pictures of our family (my family members on the left and FI's family members on the right) with rose petals on top of the table.
