Mediterranean Cruise for Honeymoon?

Fiance and I are currently in the fun part of honeymoon planning-just the thinking and investigating :)His vote is for Hawaii (which I would do in a heartbeat) but I'm still interested in exploring other locations as well. I was thinking of doing a cruise in the Mediterranean, specifically on Royal Caribbean (we've cruised on both Carnival and Disney before). They have fabulous itineraries for both the Med. & Adriatic Sea area. With all of that said, I'm not looking for people's opinions on why doing a cruise for a honeymoon is a bad experience, but rather if anyone has in fact gone on a cruise for their honeymoon in the Mediterranean/on Royal Caribbean/or just been on a cruise over there in general. I'm very curious and interested in hearing about other people's experiences. I normally wouldn't consider a honeymoon in Europe due to the exchange rate (we just got back from a trip to Ireland and the euro killed us at times), but doing a cruise would make things slightly different (meals included, etc). Sorry I rambled so much but hopefully someone has some thoughts to share! Thanks!

Re: Mediterranean Cruise for Honeymoon?

  • I absolutely loved my Med. cruise. I went with Regents (check prices, it might be more than Royal Carribean but they include EVERYTHING - no gratuity, alcohol is included, every suite has a bathtub, walk in closet, etc, excursions are included... the price you pay is worth it!). It was super convenient never having to lug suitcases around but still getting to see 10 locations in 2 weeks. It was one of the best trips I've ever been on. When is your wedding? My one warning is, things are quite crowded in the summer there. Expect lots of lines at all the museums, etc.
  • That's so good to hear. I will def. check out the line you recommended. We're going to be married at the end of August next year, but I was looking into September to help cut down on airfare costs a bit and as you mentioned, the crowds would be somewhat less. Which was your favorite port of call?

  • We went on a Med cruise for our HM on Princess and absolutely loved it!  We waited a month after our wedding, so we went late May right after Memorial Day into mid June.  It was hot then so I am glad we didn't go any later into the summer.  And in certain places it was very crowded but fortunately it didn't take away from the experience. We started in Venice then also visited Dubrovnik, Corfu, Rhodes, Olympia, Athens, Mykonos, Ephesus, Santorini, Naples, and ended in Rome.  We tried to eat lunch wherever we were in port rather than eating on the ship, so we spent a bit that way, but to us it was worth it.
  • Oh, our top 3 were probably Ephesus, Mykonos and Santorini out of that itinerary.  We had already spent a week in Rome on a previous trip, so after the cruise ended we came straight home rather than spending any additional time there.
  • We did a Mediterranean cruise on Celebrity Cruise lines. I am a cruise lover in general, but this trip was amazing!! We started in Rome, went to Naples, Mykonos and Santorini, Malta (really could have done without this stop), Nice France, and Barcelona. I think that a cruise was a great way to go to Europe for my first time because it gives you a brief view of so many different areas and cultures, so then when you go back you will know what you liked best and maybe stay the whole time in one place. Anyways, I would highly recommend it, and am a little jealous because my FI doesn't like cruises all that much. :( Have fun!!!!
  • Santorini is one of the best ports in the Mediterranean. I also loved Ephesus, Turkey (so much history there!) and some of the smaller places in Italy (we went to one that was near Pompeii, Cinque Terre, etc).
  • We actually just put a deposit down on our Mediterranean cruise for our HM.  We decided on Princess cruises b/c it was one of their newest ships and have a really fantastic itinerary.  The fact that there were so many stops in Italy, Greece, and Turkey, plus a stop in Monanco, PLUS the opportunity to fly down early and spend some time in Barcelona (our departure port) was such a good idea - plus we got a great deal!http://www.princess.com/pb/itineraryDetails.do?voyageCode=R928&trade=E
