Amalfi Coast - Italy

Hello! FI and I are exploring our honeymoon options for our September 2010 wedding and I think we have decided on the Amalfi Coast. We are looking to stay in one place as our "home base" and take several day trips. It is not definite, but we are aiming for approx. an 8-10 day trip.1. There are obviously many great cities on the coast and in the region, but which one is the best to use as our "home base?" I have heard good things about all of them, especially Amalfi and Positano. We are looking for someplace that is beautiful, convenient to transportation so we can easily do our day trips and also in a place where restaurants, shops, etc. are nearby (20 minutes or so.)2. Any hotel recommendations? Or villa recommendations? We would like some place on the water that is nice but not SUPER expensive. Since we are planning a fairly long trip, under 200 euros a night would be nice...less would be even better! :) We are open to multiple suggestions!3. Any "must sees" or "must do's?" Any other tips or advice on planning, travelling, flights, etc?I know this is a lot to ask, but since we have never been there before I could really use any advice that anyone has! Thanks so much - I REALLY appreciate all of your help!

  • Check out Sorrento as an option for a home base.  It is really picturesque.  It is really easy to go from Sorrento to Capri, and also to Positano and Mt. Vesuvius.  It has been 6 years since I was there (I studied abroad in Italy), but still remember how beautiful and relaxing Sorrento was!  I can't give you a hotel rec, I just don't remember where I stayed.  But I did use Rick Steve's Guide for travel and hotel information. Here is some basic information: http://goitaly.about.com/od/sorrentoamalficoast/p/sorrento.htmAlso, I would suggest that you look into making a side trip to the island of Ischia, it is supposed to be very romantic.  There are natural spas, which would be really fun for a honeymoon.  I haven't been but have heard great things.
