Anyone had experiences in Bali?

Ok, so we had to toss Argentina, Peru and Chile out b/c it will be colder than we'd like in June.  The FH is all about going some place where the dollar is at least moderately strong so we can get bang for our buck, and some place with beaches and hiking. We came up with Bali.  The resorts look very beautiful.  Anybody ever been there?  Heard anything about it?

Re: Anyone had experiences in Bali?

  • I'm originally from Indonesia and have been to Bali many times. It is a very beautiful place, and the US Dollar does stretch a lot more there. Lots of beautiful resorts, lots of things to do, great food. Other similar option is Thailand...
  • When does the rainy season usually start? When I did Thailand, it was at the beginning of July, and they were already into the rainy season, which made a lot of beaches unswimmable.
  • Friends of ours are leaving to Bali the next month, going to Seminyak Beach,  Ubud  & Kuta.We actaully use the same TA, and from what I have heard they got a great dealOur TA is:Speedway_roseg@optonline.netTA: Rose
  • Ladies, you guys are great!!  This board is a wealth of information!  Thanks so much.  I will present this information to my FH.  I think that he will be more excited than ever.  We will also look into Thailand.  We both love to hike and bike ride so we definitely want to go somewhere where we can do the physical activity, and see beautiful sights (mountains, valleys, fields, etc.) while also catching the beach experience.Msaputra,What are the main differences between Thailand and Bali in terms of a honeymoon experience?Fall2009,Do you think that your TA would be open to us contacting him/her?
  • Msaputra,Here's what I read on a webpage:Swimming attire or shorts or tops that do not cover the shoulders should not be worn outside the hotel areas. Is this true?  My main concern would be that me and FH are going hiking or just hanging out, shopping, going to the temples, etc. and can't really wear shorts (or I can't wear my strapless summer tops).  We'll be honeymooning in June.  If this is accurate, that's fine.  We'd just like to confirm in advance to figure out if we want to be restricted in dress during the honeymoon, given that it will be June and probably hot! Thanks so much for your feedback!
  • We went to Bali for our honeymoon in Feb 08. We absolutely loved it. You really do get a huge bang for your buck there. You can also do anything from laying on the beach getting a massage to whitewater rafting and mountain biking. There are also tons of cultural things to do. I wouldn't worry about dress. We wore shorts, skirts, dresses, tank tops, whatever the whole time. Some of the temples do require special dress, but most of the time they will provide you with a cover-up for your time there.
  • Oh great!  Thanks Katiebug! We love hiking and biking as well as the beach scene.  Do you recommend any particular cities or resorts?
  • We stayed in several different areas; Legian, Kuta, Tanjung Benoa, Ubud, and Nusa Lembongan. I wouldn't really recommend our Legian or Kuta hotels and the one in Tanjung Benoa was a timeshare (Peninsula Beach Resort). It was awesome, but I think you may have to be a member, not positive though. We loved Batu Karang on Nusa Lembongan. It was so nice and beautiful and the staff was incredibly friendly. In Ubud, we stayed at KaJane Mua. It was also great and I would highly recommend it. The rooms are really nice and the private plunge pools are really big. The staff was also great there! I'm not sure how long you'll be going, but I would definitely recommend trying to check out a couple of different areas. Let me know if you have other questions. We loved Bali!
  • Thanks Katiebug, I'll look into those areas (and your timeshare recommendation as we both have timeshares that we planned to bank to use in Bali - we have RCI so we can probably get into the Peninsula with that company - we'll see).  We are planning on two weeks right now.  Thanks so much for the recommendations!!!
  • Definitely check into it. It's not as fancy as some of the other resorts, but it's definitely comfortable and the staff is really nice and helpful!
  • Deidra,Indonesians in general are very conservative. Most people would wear t shirt to go swimming :) however, this is not necessarily the case in Bali. there are a lot of westerners in Bali, so I think you should be ok as long as it's not too revealing.Thailand and Bali are both beautiful! I've only been to Thailand once when I was 6 years old, so don't remember much. But from the pictures I've seen and friends who have been there they all had wonderful experiences.Bali is great. Lots of beautiful beaches, outdoor activities, and very rich in cultural stuff.
  • One note though, when you go to the temple, you might have to cover up. But as far as going to the beach, and hiking, you can wear shorts, etc.
  • Kuta and Legian are more touristy and very crowded. I would recommend staying a couple days in Nusa Dua for the nice resorts, and then a couple days in Ubud (more inland, to see rice fields, mountains, etc).
  • Msaputra, THANK YOU!!!  That's great feedback.  We absolutely would cover up out of respect while in or near the temples.  And we will be sure to hit the three cities that you mentioned!!! Again, many thanks to EVERYONE!
