Anyone been to Belize?

We're thinking of going to Ambergris Caye the first week of June. Would love some hotel recommendations and things to do. Also is the weather ok in June? I know it's the beginning of hurricane season. Should we risk it? Need help! Thanks!

Re: Anyone been to Belize?

  • I would recommend staying somewhere outside of San Pedro.  It's nice to have access to the town, because there are lots of good local restuarants there, as well as some shops and internet cafes.  However, the hotels that were right in town didn't look as nice as those further away.  Xanadu is popular and within a 10-15 minute walk of the town.  I stayed next door at Coral Bay Villas, which was nice because we had a full condo with lots of space to spread out.  It wasn't neccessarily fancy or luxurious, but it's a nice place, the staff is great, and it's a good price.  Victoria House was the prettiest place I saw (from the outside), but it's pretty far from town.  If you stay further out, you can always rent a golf cart to drive to town for some meals.  Our favorite restaurant in San Pedro was Blue Water Grill.   We went on a snorkelling trip every day with Searious Adventures.  Their full day manatee watching trip and lunch on Goff's Caye was wonderful.  Mexico Rocks had some beautiful, healthy corals, and it was one of my favorite snorkel spots.  And of course, Shark Ray Alley is a unique experience.     Even if you are staying on the beach, I would take some tours inland.  You should go cave tubing, visit the zoo, and visit Lamanai Archaeological site. As for weather, you can't predict what a hurricane in the Atlantic will do to the weather there.  I went in August, which is rainy season.  Without hurricanes, the rain was limited to a few 15 minute patches a day.  After that, the wind blew the clouds away and we had sun.   June doesn't seem like a high risk time for hurricanes in the Caribbean.  If you are worried about it, is there a way you could make your trip flexible, so that if there is a storm at the beach, you have the option of renting a car and exploring the rest of Belize?
