South Pacific Honeymoon

Hello ladies! We are thinking about going on a honeymoon to the Fiji/Bora Bora/Tahiti area in April 2010. We have a maximum of 12 days to spend, including travel time and a budget of 5k. Is this possible for our budget? Has anyone been there during that time of year and do you have any advice? Any tips are appreciated!

Re: South Pacific Honeymoon

  • Several girls on my local board (Boston) have gone to the South Pacific and from what I know of their trips they were at least double your 5k budget. Obviously the flight is a large chunk of that but I recommend you speak to a travel agent soon to find out if this is do able.

  • With a budget of 5k, Fiji will definitely be a better option than French Polynesia, but I think it will be very difficult to make it work.  We are planning a 12 night trip and accommodations alone are more than twice your budget.  Not sure where you're located, but our airfare from Chicago is about $3200.  Definitely talk to a TA asap.

  • flights alone will cost you at least 3k.  I can't speak for Fiji but I did some research on tahiti and rooms will cost at least 400 a night (cheapest room cheapest resorts).  Food and drinks are VERY expensive there as well so that will probably tack on at least 1k to your budget (probably more).  I don't think it's possible to do this trip on 5k. you'd need more like 10k at the very least!

  • Unfortunately just about every trip I've seen for that area for that amount of time is much closer to 10k. You might want to rethink the location a bit.

  • Our flights to Fiji alone cost almost $5k.

  • We are going to Fiji for our HM and we are paying for our flights this month and the flighs alone are $2700. I would say your budget would need to be more towards $10,000 but you can do it for less. Fiji tends to be cheaper than Bora Bora or Tahiti, but it's still expensive. I don't forsee it working on a $5,000 budget but you could do it for less than $10k if you go with a regular villa or bure instead of an overwater bungalow or the HM suite styled rooms. Talk to a TA and see your options. If this is your dream it can be done but for a little more than what you were originally thinking. GL and HTH! :0)
  • Yes, int'l flights will cost you around $2 - $3kl, (for both) but I think Air Tahiti Nui is having a sale right now for January - June, so definitely look into that - I am going this fall and paying at least $400 more per ticket than the sale price, so it is good, so I think it is around $1k pp? I'd probably skip Bora Bora though b/c that adds another $450 pp for the local flight, unless you are very conservative with the accommodations. In Moorea there are a bunch of pensions and cheaper hotels that are definitely under $400 a night. Just depends if you want the typical resort honeymoon or if you are willing to try a more low-key accommodation just to be in paradise. I only know this from research - I haven't actually been yet, but you can find lost of info online. You may find deals with a travel agent too, since I think April is low season still. For Fiji, there are a range of accommodations / pricing depending on the island, and if you stick to an island you can get to by boat, once you're there, you should be able to stay on budget. Again, depends on if you are looking for fancy or just want to be in paradise. Definitely get off the main island though, don't try to save just by staying on it. Obviously $5k will go a lot further in Hawaii or the Caribbean, but I think if you are creative and diligent in your research, you can go to the South Pacific. We're going for 9 nights this fall for around $8k total, and staying in pretty nice places w/b'fast included, so I think you can do it for $5k - if you don't count lunch/dinner/activities.
  • I've looked into this for our anniversary.  From Chicago, I couldn't see doing it for less than around $10K.  I know that sounds expensive, but as the pp mention, the air and hotels are not cheap.Have you been to/thought about Hawaii?  This way you could get a taste of the tropics for less $$$ and travel time.  In Kauai, for example, you could likely stay at a nice resort, enjoy activities, etc., within your budget.  The Na Pali coast is gorgeous- probably one of the most beautiful places in the world.

  • Yeah I agree with everyone above! Going to the south pacific and staying in nice resorts will be alot more than $5K. Maybe check out mexico at an all inclusive or the caribbean. cheers!
  • I know this is way late, but I just wanted to say thanks! I ended up contacting a travel agent (which I have never done before because I love to shop around for great deals and I always felt like I could do it cheaper myself), but it turned out to be great advice. We did need to increase our budget a little, but that wasn't really a big deal to us. We ended up with 2 nights in Tahiti, 3 in Moorea, and 5 in Bora Bora with an overwater bungalow for 7k! That price includes all flights (from CA), transfers, hotels, and travel insurance. I'm starting to get really excited!!!
  • Corey's Girl- Congrats! That's an amazing price! Mind if I ask what TA you used and which hotels you've decided on!?

  • Not on purpose, we ended up with all Hilton hotels. The first hotel is the Hilton Hotel in Tahiti which is just a quick stop to get rested and adjusted to the jet lag. Then we go to the Sheraton on Moorea which was just bought out by Hilton and our next hotel is the Bora Bora Nui which was also just bought by Hilton. We just used a travel agent in our small town where we live right now. I can give you her contact info if you'd like, but it sounds like you already have all your plans! :)
