South America vs. Europe

Has anyone been to South America?  We are looking at some places like Chile, Brazil, Peru... and not sure if this would be a great honeymoon destination.  Has anyone been to any of these countries?  What are they like?  Recommendations?  On the other hand, we are looking at Italy - Venice, Rome, Amalfi Coast... and I need someone to tell me which one is best for honeymooning!  We are both very adventurous, but we want a romantic honeymoon too.  Any suggestions/help would be appreciated!

Re: South America vs. Europe

• I havent been to South America but I have friends who have gone and LOVED it. I've been all over europe on a bunch of trips, and those are definitely places you have to visit. However if you're honestly torn, I'd base it on time of year (season will be opposite in SA from Europe) - Go wherever will have better weather. SA will be much cheaper especially with how bad our $$ is doing against the Euro lately, but it's your HM so go all out :)
• We spent some time in Peru. My H's family is from there. A lot of people do the Macchu Picchu trip. You can take a train or hike up the mountain and then explore the ruins. We didn't get to go, but we are hoping to in 2011. What time of year are you going? That should make a difference.
• Your dollars will definitely go a lot further in S.A. We took a trip to Chile, Buenos Aires, and Uruguay and had a great time. B.A. was a serious deal, and it's very European. Italy is great, but if you're wanting to save some cash or really live it up, I'd say S.A. Ditto PP on the time of year. We actually went during the winter (August), and it was perfect. I much prefer the winter for city touring no matter where I go because of less crowds and a general dislike of sweating ;)
• We will be going mid-October.  What are the must-see cities/sites in South America?
• If I could do everything I wanted in SA, I would do Macchu Picchu, wineries in Chile, the jungle and the amazon in Brazil, Rio, Buenos Aires, the beaches on the north like Guyana, and a bunch of other stuff, but that would take like 6 months. If you talk to a travel agent, they can give you some ideas to fit in the amount of time you have and your budget and hit all the stuff you want to see.
• Its $3 to our $1 in Peru and South America, you will get hit hard in Europe, our dollar doesnt go far.  Peru was awesome!
• October is a good month to go to either Western Europe or most of South America.  If you are more into adventure travel, I would pick SA all the way.  Argentina makes a fabulous honeymoon destination.  As PPs have said, Buenos Aires is very European but much cheaper than Western Europe.  You'll probably only pay more for airfare.  It has tons of culture, beautiful architecture, and great food.  Mendoza is Argentina's wine country- it's about two hours by plane from Buenos Aires and definitely worth the trip.  As well as visiting wineries, you can go hiking and horseback riding.  For adventure travel, Patagonia (in southern Argentina and Chile) and the lakes district is absolutely a must-see, but the tourist season there doesn't really start up until mid-October and it will still be very chilly at that time of year.Peru would also be good- you can hike the Incan Trail (October is the very end of the dry season) and do a land/water safari in the Amazon rainforest.  Cuzco is beautiful and romantic, and you can go down to the Lake Titicaca region as well.

• Never been to SA, but would love to go some day.  We went to Italy (Amalfi Coast, Venice, Rome... and Florence and Siena).  It was wonderfully romantic and we did our share of outdoorsy stuff (rented boats, bikes, hiking, etc.)!  My trip bio is here:http://sites.google.com/site/killian0517/home/honeymoon
