Hawaii luau ideas?

Hi Ladies!FI and I have booked our honeymoon and we are spending 2 weeks in Hawaii this July. We are spending 4 days on Oahu at the Sheraton Waikiki and then the rest of the 2 weeks at the Grand Wailea on Maui. (Originally, we had booked the Westin on Maui, but as a birthday present to me FI upgraded us to an ocean-view suite at the Grand Wailea!) Anyway, we were wondering if anyone has suggestions for a great luau either on Maui or Oahu? Ideally, we'd prefer Maui because we will have a car and will be spending the bulk of the honeymoon there. Or, we also plan on doing a day trip to the Big Island, so if there is a good luau there we could hit it on that day. Also, does anyone have suggestions for "must sees" on either Ohau or Maui? We know the typical ones (Pearl Harbor, Cultural Center, Road the Hana, etc) but are looking for some that might be off the beaten path. I have seen other posts that suggest picking up the book Maui Revealed, but I haven't had a chance yet.

Re: Hawaii luau ideas?

  • We did the Feast at Lele luau on Maui. Pros: private table with table service, food more "upscale" than a lot of the others, fewer tables/people in general, definitely way less kids Cons: expensive ($110/pp), service was spotty, as was the food. many courses, but almost all seafood- some really good, some really bad. i also felt that the show portion of the meal was way too short. I'd probably do Old Lahaina next time, but make reservations now so you get a good table! We made our reservations a few months in advance for Feast and our table was upfront & center.

  • Thanks for the review! I'm not a huge seafood fan (I eat fish, but not shellfish), so I'd ideally like a luau with other options.
  • Hilton Hawaiian Village Luau on Oahu is where we have decided for our January honeymoon. I can post after my trip if it is worth it.
  • I've heard Old Lahaina Luau is the best luau on Maui. We'll be there next month, so I'll post reviews when we get back :)
  • We did the Old Lahaina Luau on Maui and really enjoyed it. Def pick up the Maui Revealed book. It has a lot helpful information and the maps were great. I would recommend eating at Mama's Fishhouse also. Food was soooo good! DH really enjoyed a ziplining tour we did at the base of Haleakala. When you're on Oahu, I recommend renting a car for only one day and driving to the North Shore to get out of Waikiki. You'll love it!
  • We've done the Old Lahaina Luau on Maui twice and brought our wedding guests to it the second time. They LOVED it. The food is pretty darned tasty and the dancing is really spectacular.
  • We were in Maui this past Sept. Old Lahaina Lua is a great time! Book early for a good table. Here's the scoop. You walk in and get your table assignment, You are then given a Mai Tai and a floral Lei while you wait in line for your server to bring you to your seat. Once brought over to your seat you are given the opportunity to walk around and see the cultural things going on (arts n' crafts, Hawaiian music, take pics, etc...). It is open bar all night long (includes everything - pina colada's, beer, wine, etc..) . You can get your own drinks or have a server get them for you. You are asked to be seated and the tables are brought up to the buffet by sections. You can eat and much as you want ang go up for 2nd's if you would like. The food was average but there wa a huge selection. Other suggestions.... Get out an explore, do the bike down Haleakala, drive the entire island - both sides! Go snorkleing, we went through The Pacific Whale Foundation and snorkled at Molokini and Lana'i. Spend some time on Front Street in Lahaina-lots of shops & restaurants. And yes - Get the Revelaed Book - it will be your bible. Especially if you are intereted in getting off the beaten path. ENJOY!!!
  • Thanks for all of the suggestions! I can't wait to go!
  • If you decide to go on Oahu, Paradise Cove Luau is an amazing time.

  • We did the Luau at the Hyatt. It was a great show. I have the link in my "miss" bio under honeymoon. Open bar, but you sit with other peeps...not a biggie tho. And great food! And a lot of it! -We really liked the Winery on maui. -there is a Bike co, i'm going to miss spell it, Haleaklea bike tours that allow you to ride down the volcano at your own pace. I recommend that company over the company we used. -Lahina Grill was an amazing dinner!!! -Rent your own snorkel gear! and get a map to some great local spots.

  • We also went to the Old Lahaina Luau. Let me first say we loved it... BUT, you are sat at picnic style tables next to anyone and everyone. We loved that we were next to three other newlyweds. I wouldn't have changed a thing, I just wanted to let you know.
