Eco honeymoons anyone???

has anyone ever considered ecotourism/resorts/property when planning their honeymoon? they are all over the world and some of them are very inexpensive (i'm talking no more than $115 per day/room/cabin/bungalow/tree house/etc). of course you will sometimes have to give up certain amenities and luxuries of modern life, but for the price and experience it's well worth it. you won't be adding to the pollution from cruises or depleting entire habitats like with most resorts. and if you are worried about hygiene, some places provide soap, and you can also purchase environmentally friendly products from www.lush.com or your local natural market and whole foods. there are often self-guided tours, artists, activities involving the outdoors to enjoy for a fee or no fee at all. and if you want to be self-indulgent many have spas. and for those who truly could care less about all the vacation things just stay in and enjoy each other. think about it!

Re: Eco honeymoons anyone???

  • we did consider this, but then when we were looking at what we wanted as well as our budget, we decided to go with our dream budget honeymoon (ai resort in mexico).  it fit with what we wanted and our budget.  i also didnt feel that guilty--we recycle 100% of the time, have our own compost, i work for an eco designer, we have an eco friendly house (solar), drive hybrids, eat organic, grow our own veggies...one vacation will not make THAT much of a difference in my life.  i want to feel pampered and cannot afford 115$ a day on top of airfare and food and adventures unfortunately  :/
  • Actually yes, we're staying at Chaa Creek in Belize-it was rated as one of the top 10 eco-luxury resorts in the world in 2009. I'm pretty excited about it, it looks amazing and I can't wait to be in the jungle-there's so much to do there, the resort is on 365 acres. I can't imagine just lying on a beach for hours on end for our honeymoon. If you're into adventure and activity for a honeymoon, this appears to be the place to go. The fact that it's considered a top 'green' resort just adds to its appeal. Can't wait!
