Honeymoon Scam?

I've been to a handful of bridal shows recently and my friends were signing me up for things left and right. I just got a phone call from a woman representing 'RP Health Spectrums' some sort of pots and pans company. She said we won a 3 day 2 night honeymoon to either Mexico, Dominican or Bahamas. All I'd have to do is pay for airfare and sit through a pots and pan presentation of some sort.

Has anyone heard of this and actually done it? Is it a scam? We don't have much money for a honeymoon and I'm praying this is the real deal!

Re: Honeymoon Scam?

  • Something similar happened to us with "Pink Apron," but we didn't go to the pots and pans presentation.  We figured it wasn't worth it.  I think they call everyone, and they literally called me 3 times to give me info and make sure I was coming which I thought was strange and annoying.  However, I do have a friend who won a legit 2-night 3-day trip a couple years ago after attending a presentation, but she said it wasn't worth it to even go because the resort didn't have the best reputation, it only covered 2 nights, she would've still had to pay for airfare (one of the biggest costs!), and it only allowed them to go during certain times of the year.  So in other words, they wouldn't have been able to go where they wanted, when they wanted and still would've had to pay for most of the trip.  Honestly, I don't think it's worth it at all if you don't even get to choose when and where you go.  If you're looking to save money on a honeymoon, then this is probably one of the worst ways because it will lock you into going to certain destinations where airfare and accommodations are not the cheapest.  If you're looking for a budget honeymoon though, this board can definitely help you out...these ladies give great advice!

  • Total scam-o-rama
  • This happened to this once and they actually gave us the locations and resorts that were supposedly participating. We called one resort and they said they had no idea who the company was that was using their name and had no partnership with them.
  • The same happened to me with "Pink Apron" as well, I was told the same thing about the 2 night honeymoon thing, don't fall for it!!
  • I've heard of these a lot and I don't think that they are a complete scam but they're not worth it either.  If they don't ask for any identifying information or money up front then it's probably legit, however, from what I've heard you usually have to sit through a really long presentation, you stay at a crappy hotel and won't get to do anything that you want to do.  Your entire trip will be spent learning about this company.  Plus, they will probably attempt to contact you via phone and through snail mail forever.  If money is tight, you are better off going somewhere closer that costs less or waiting and saving up money.  Scam or not, I wouldn't recommend it.  Good luck! : )
  • A lot of times these aren't 'scams', exactly, because they're real companies selling whatever, and they really will give you 2-3 days.  The problem is that they're not usually a very good deal, because not much is included, they're not at the nicest hotels, and you wind up having to spend a bunch of money getting there, paying for meals, etc.

So basically yes, you get two free nights, but it's at a place where you wouldn't normally stay, you still have to fork over a bunch of your own money, and is it really worth it to go that far away for only a couple of days?  The way these places make money is that people wind up buying the pots and pans (or whatever) and rarely take them up on the free vacation because it's a bad deal.  So it's a scam in that what they're offering sucks, but they're not lying or stealing your bank info or anything.
