Niagra Falls..any suggestions

We are getting married in cleveland ohio in august  but we won't be taking our real honeymoon until december.
We were thinking about going to Niagra falls for 2 or three days to just relax and enjoy ourselves.  Anyone have any suggestions about areas to stay or what to do there?  Anything really about the location, haven't been there since I was a kid

As a Canadian I seriously urge you to rethink this. Winter up here sucks. A LOT. However if you are brave enough to do it...

There are plenty of winter activities you can do (I don't know precise details about what's going on at The Falls and you haven't specified if you're staying on the American side or coming to the Canadian side but...) there's ice skating, toboganning, snow shoeing, dog sledding, snowman making, cooking classes, etc...I'd look into renting a log cabin instead of going to a traditional hotel too.

That makes all the difference :)  The main strip of Niagara Falls can be fun if you're into fun houses, haunted houses and the like.  There are two casinos and great hotels overlooking the falls.  Personally, though,  I'd suggest renting a car and heading up the road to Niagara on the Lake.  It's a gorgeous town with lots of great shopping and restaurants, horse drawn carriage rides etc....plus, you're in the heart of wine country and you can do some great winery tours!  Might be a bit more romantic for your honeymoon :)

Several wine trails in the area.

Chautauqua Institution on your way there or home.

The Buffalo Waterfront.  Templeton Landing restaurant.
  • Stay on the Canadian side.  We stayed 3 nights and saw everything around the falls and went out into wine country.  It was just enough time.  Anything more and we would've been bored.
  • look out for Groupons.  Groupon Destinations have Niagara Falls hotel deals all the time.  I believe they're usually for the Canadia side which is much better than the USA side.
  • If you do go you have to do the Jet Boat. Its so much fun! My dad and I were in the front row and got drenched! They go all the way to class 4 rapids I believe.  Its illegal to go in anything above that.

  • I went to the Canadian side a few years ago in early December and boy was it cold!  We stayed at the Courtyard Marriot and it was wonderful.  I absolutely recommend them, but they are several blocks away from the falls.  They had hot tubs in the room which made staying inside very nice.  We had just spent our days walking around, visiting shops, etc.  You will have a great time!

August sounds a lot better than December to travel there! It is freezing in the winter!

FI and I are also from Cleveland and actually got engaged in Niagara Falls December 2010.
It was cold, but not much colder than Cleveland.

Looks like you are going in August.  I'd also recommend Niagara on the Lake.  When we went in the winter, a lot of the water-based activities were closed, but the ones that were open (journey behind the falls, etc.) were awesome because they weren't crowded at all and th e ice/snow was beautiful.

We did journey behind the falls one day and walked around the park on the American side, spent one evening in the Fallsview casino and went to a nice dinner, went to Niagara on the Lake and did one fun house, Ripley's.

In the summer I'd also suggest the gondola rides and jet-boat tours, both are fun.

This was my view from the Embassy Suites hotel.  We got a great deal on travelzoo, which included a spa tub in the room and free breakfast buffet. I would also recommend going on the Maid of the Mist, if it's still running. It's a lot of fun to wander around the streets, even though it is such a tourist trap.

I grew up right outside of Niagara Falls and I would say to honestly spend your money elsewhere. There are smaller towns in NY not too much farther away that are way cuter and more relaxing. Try Skaneateles, Trumansburg or Ithaca. I personally love Ithaca - my fiance and I got engaged in Trumansurg at a really cute B&B called Juniper Hill. It's right outside of Ithaca which has tons of great waterfalls, restaurants, etc. Not to mention it's on the water which is beautiful. I would do that instead of going to NF, you would be disappointed there. It's definitely not the honeymoon capital that it used to be and the Canadian side is just a huge cheesy tourist trap where young kids from Buffalo go to drink at night because you can do so legally at 19.
