Hawaiian Islands question!

Hi, we are going to the Hawaiian Isle for our 1st anniversary, we have Maui, Kaui, and Oahu booked, should we also include the isle of Hawaii?  Is it worth it?  We just watched a travel video and it looks amazing! Or is it something you wouldnt recommend? Thanks!

How long are you going for? Three islands seems like plenty. I would want to spend at least 3-4 nights per island to make it worth it and not feel extremely rushed. It might be worth it to go to less islands and be able to do more stuff at each place. You could always go back and go to the big island for another anniversary trip or something. Or go as a family if/when you have kids.

  • I agree, I would only visit the 3 that way you have more time to do things and are not rushed the whole time.  That sounds like a lot of fun though!  We're going to Oahu for our HM, I'm so excited!!

  • How long are you going?  The first time I went to Hawaii, we went for a week and did Oahu and Maui and felt super rushed...I wouldn't recommend island hopping unless you are going to be there at least 10 days.

I will say though that the Big Island has been my favorite so far (we are actually considering moving there) and it's definitely worth a visit, but not if you are only going to be there for a day or two.

Take your time on each island, you can always go back to visit different ones later....

  • We are doing a 10 day tour with Perillo Tours, they do everything for you as far as scheduling you and getting you around. Hawaii is a 3 day add-on.  We are still considering it as we live in NJ and doubt we will go back any time soon due to having a family and such.
  • Having been there a few times (and going on our honeymoon), I would say there isn't anything you could do on Hawaii that you couldn't do on the other islands. My recommendation is not to overdo it.  The islands you have listed are great and unless you are dying for three extra days of vacation, 10 days will be adequate to enjoy your time on the other islands.

This Big Island is the only one with an active volcano, so technically you can't see that on any of the other islands.  Not saying that the other islands aren't equally spectacular, just that it's not necessarily true that you can do everything there on the other islands.

I would still recommend not to overdo it though.  Although the flights between islands are really short, you still end up wasting a lot of time transferring between checking out of your hotel, going through airport security, waiting to board, flight time, getting your bags (carry on sizes need to be checked on inter-island flights because their overhead bins are a lot smaller), getting a rental car, checking into a new hotel, etc.  You'll end up spending at least half a day each time you fly between islands doing all that, so the less islands you go to the better.

  • I agree with PPs. That's a lot of island hopping, unless you are coming here for like a month or something. There's so much to do on each island, but there's also lots of opportunities to kick back and relax by the beach/pool with a Mai Tai in your hand. I feel like you'll be so busy getting as much in as possible on each island you won't take time to breathe, relax and enjoy your vacation!

I haven't made it to the Big Island yet..I just moved here last August..but we are going in June and it looks awesome. That's another thing..I've been here (on Oahu) for 8 months and seriously do something new each weekend and I STILL have more things on my checklist to see and do!

  • We're going for 11 nights and 12 days and doing Kauai and Maui.  I would feel too rushed to do 3 islands, let alone 4.  I went to maui years ago and spent 8 days there.  We could have spent three times that amount of time there!

We want to see the Big Island too but we'll save that for when we go back to Hawaii.  Maybe with kids :)
