Winter Eastern Wonderland Help?

Hi! My fiance and I could use some help. We can't decide between going to the Kaatskill Mountain Club or the Smugglers Notch Village... or any other winter mountain resort in the Northeast. Any advice on where to go would be great and much appreciated. We will be going over New Years of next year if that makes a difference at all. Thanks for your help!
Just background: we would like to have a lot of snow on the ground, be able to ice skate, eat good food, and have a fireplace wherever we stay. While the option of snowboarding and sledding would be a plus it is not required. Furthermore, it needs to be in or next to the mountains because that is the focal point of what we are desiring. Thanks again!

    Lake Placid, NY.  It's absolutely gorgeous and they do their best to make sure the area doesn't get built up.  It's the site of where the Winter Olympic were held, so there are tons of activities to do and sites to see, and it's right near White Face which is a great mountain if you decide to ski/snowboard/snowtube.  And if you get a rental even just a little bit on the outskirts of Lake Placid or in one of the neighboring towns, you'll have all the privacy in the world.

    In town you can go ice skating on outdoor rinks, dog sledding, snowshoeing, etc. and there are towns of cute little shops and stores.

    I went there with my family when I was in high school and our cabin was AMAZING, very private, and it backed right up to a lake.

    Here are some cabins/lodges in the area: http://www.adirondackholiday.com/AlderLodge.html

  • I grew up on Long Island, and IMO, the Adirondacks are far superior to the Catskills.  Saratoga, NY and Lake George, NY (within a half hour of each other) are two of my favorite towns up there; gorgeous all year round and highly recommended in the winter!  {btw these places are a little over an hour south of Lake Placid, which was mentioned by PP}

    You can't go wrong in the north country!  Happy planning!
  • Thanks! We'll check out the adirondaks - and now FI is looking at New Orleans lol...
  • Mount Washington Hotel is gorgeous! And usually very snowy.
